Stay away from the "Anime/Manga/Mecha Mania" books. They are pretty...awful. I recommend the series of "How to draw..." books that SakechanBD linked to...I have about 10 of them.

I'd really like to learn how to draw anime well enough to be proud of a drawing (perhaps further Very Happy)...

Can anyone actually draw anime well from learning from these books?

These books really aren't going to teach you how to draw, you need to have some basic drawing skills to begin with. What these books really do is point you in the right direction to develop a style very similar to manga.

There are a lot of basics involved with a few of the beginning books, but for the most part, these make great references to develop your own manga style. The other big thing they teach is the use of tones which is an integral part of manga drawing.

To be honest I wouldn't be hung up on drawing "manga\anime style" if you look at applications for manga Colleges in Japan you'll see that all you need is a firm grasp of the language and good draftsman skills this does not mean "manga style". It simply means keep practicing human form and what not and also don't waste your money on the books download tutorials instead.
