Limited edition boxed sets, DVDs, or merchandise are a God given for the Otaku and a curse for anyone who misses the deal. Nothing upsets me more than finding out that I missed the opportunity at a good, limited buy. This happened to me with the FLCL box. I took a vacation away from home for two weeks and when I get home I find out that the only way that I can get this rarity is through the dreaded ebay. On the other hand, if you catch the deal in time and you do get your item, you feel a sense of pride in your collection which now contains a Limited Edition item.
I was just wondering if anyone felt the same way about these limited editions as I do. |

I could of got this Evangelion boxset for $60 on ebay a while back. but my dad wouldn't order it for me cause he thought it wasn't clean...and I still haven't gotten around to seeing it all of it. I'm pretty sure it was legit seeing as how it wasn't $25 and I remember it having the picture.

Well, the problem is I just want a basic boxset, I don't want extras except as options. I want to have a simple case that holds all the DVDs, ala Nadesico. The Eva box is nice, but if I could have a small plastic case for cheaper, cool.

Yeah I definitely agree with releasing a clamshell casing that holds all the DVDs like Nadesico or Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 versus the DVD boxed set that has each DVD individually. The eight DVD set may come with the original casing for each DVD, but it is much more expensive than the clamshell. I paid $80 for my Nadesico boxed set and close to $150 for my Evangelion boxed set.

I only have one limited edition item in my collection, and that is Witch Hunter Robin. And the main reason I went for it was for the artbox and the soundtrack. Didn't really care about the T-shirt or the shot glass.

heh yeah, I don't mind the OST's though, the music is really nice, but the box for it is a little too bulky and akward on the shelf with the rest of the collection |

Meh... I prefer not to get boxes, frankly, as they just annoy me. I always take the discs out and store the boxes.
Most of the Limited Edition goods are things that don't appeal to me, generally. Oftentimes I'll have already picked up the OSTs that have been released with a LE set, so even that isn't much of an incentive for me.... I do like the current trend towards repackaging the DVDs into single clamshell cases, a la Crest of the Stars.... |

I don't really trust limited editions anymore. A few times I've bought a limited edition item only to have the company suddenly double or triple the number they were releasing, reducing the value. Or I'll buy something from a numbered limited edition of 10,000 and end up with number 14,714, proving that it wasn't really all that limited.

Limited Editions are the harsh, cruel mistress of legit anime releases, which come with their own good and bad.
The good being it's something that only YOU own, that you and 9,999 other people own out of 6 billion people world wide. Then theres the extras, if they're good. There's a few bad things though. The first being that they release a collectors box... at the begining of the series? That's a bit strange, being a collectors box would obviously have to indicate you are a collector, so why not release it on the middle/last volume, when you're ACTUALLY COLLECTING IT. Of course though, there's a good reason for that though. The answer, here, is Samurai Deeper Kyo. The box (I know this isn't limited, but it falls under the same category so to speak) is a wonderful, nice, homely wooden box with all kinds of pretty designs. Or, the .hack//SIGN volume 1 with box, with craploads of extras. Or maybe s-CRY-ed with its limited pendant? Or Last Exile with the figurine? You're seeing what I get at here, those sorts of things lure people into getting atleast the first volume, so if people decide its crap, they;re not just spent $17-26, they're spent atlewast 40 (maybe), so the respective company HAS made more money. Also, two other stories involving me and limited editions. First was a friend who wanted to buy the R1 bebop box, and ended up paying around $41 AUD (32 USD if I remember) for it. This was a good deal for him, and it shudders to make me think about other boxes Next is the Limited edition (10000 only) R2 DBZ boxed sets. The ammount of money I could of saved on those is just incredibly annoying, as they come and go so quickly. But eh |

All limited edition merchandise should be banished to the darkest, deepest, dankest, hottest, most inaccessible and generally horrible bowls of hell from whence they crawled out of, where I hope to join them soon.
