{This is my first post in the manga forum
There was a pretty lengthy discussion in the anime forum about anime that were derived from novels. And many want to read translations of these said novels [Boogiepop, Crest of the Stars, Grave of the Fireflies, etc]. Also, I am an american in OZ and I have noticed that all Manga are imports from the US {for like $20 each!}. So, my question is this: Does a company like Tokyopop own the distribution and translation rights in the US only, OR do they own the English rights in total? |

It's both. Japan is a member of the Berne Convention, an International coalition which protects the literary works among its members. A like Viz et al U.S. company has to adhere to the articles of this convention. I think Australia is a member as well.
The following two articles of the Berne Convention are pertinent to your question. Article 8: Right of Translation Authors of literary and artistic works protected by this Convention shall enjoy the exclusive right of making and of authorizing the translation of their works throughout the term of protection of their rights in the original works. Article 9: Right of Reproduction (1) Authors of literary and artistic works protected by this Convention shall have the exclusive right of authorizing the reproduction of these works, in any manner or form. (2) It shall be a matter for legislation in the countries of the Union to permit the reproduction of such works in certain special cases, provided that such reproduction does not conflict with a normal exploitation of the work and does not unreasonably prejudice the legitimate interests of the author. ... |

So, Theoretically, it would be possible for OZ/UK to acquire regional rights to translate Manga into English? Or, if Tokyopop has global rights of any English version, how could you find out?

Yes. According to the site below, among others, Madman Entertainment has formed a manga distribution department. Some titles licensed include ones that TokyoPop has distributed in the states. Prices are set at $14.95 ($11.65 USD). http://www.anime.org.au/main/article.php?story=20030918171711483
I haven't clue. Licensing can differ between titles and regions. You can usually find out what is licensed through the company website for upcoming products and press releases. You can also check out news sites dedicated to anime. NOTE: I find it suspicious that the Madman announcement was not on their site. I'm not sure what that means... BTW. I am by no means an expert in copyright law. I could be completely wrong, which isn't the first time. |

Humbled by your teachings! *bows to ANN webserver - in your general direction*
I hope your info about OZ manga is true. I ain't payin' $25 + for a comic I can get for US$10! I have asked Tokyopop about how it works, on several occassions, but they are too mighty to acknowledge my existance. Thanks for the info in any case, if they ever give me any info I will post it! |
