Continued from Fandubs thread

Quote:
Any cinematographer or film editor will tell you that the integrity of the visuals matters as much as the integrity of the sound. Putting text on the screen not only alters the image, but alters the ability of a viewer to process the visuals.

The sound again, has nothing to do with it. It has to do with artistic integrity. An actor's performance is utterly replaced, and the dialog is performed and directed by completely different people.

A good example, right now is George Lucas' insistence that the SEs be the only version of Star Wars available, except in this case he really does have the power to force his vision on you. While you may or may not agree with his changes (Han shoots first damnit!) it is his right as an artist to make them. Thankfully he's seen that that's wrong, and Han once again shoots first in the Ultimate Edition

Artistic integrity is paramount, whether you're making Barney or Citizen Kane.

This argument is going in circles. Neither side is going to budge an inch on this one. Read this: Locked. Forever.

Addendum. Aaron would like a last word, so this can of worms is open again.

Actually all I wanted to say was that I've said all I need to say. Since I've had too much caffeine to rein in my own worst impulses and I'm sure Sword of Whedon is basically a good person I'll do everyone a favor and withdraw. Thanks SakechanBD, and I'm out!

Please take into fact that it's a lot easier for people to get into something if it's in their own language, atleast, most of the time.

And why bring this up here and not in a relevant board/site? Just pointless flaming it seems.

The reason why dubs are not evil is because dubs carry emotional context that the subtitles can not always carry. For example, I have watched Eva through several times. There is one particular episode where Misato is drunk. At one point she is suppose to be somewhat, but not totally, drunk. The director chose to show her state only using her voice, rather than visual clues. The vocal clues are pretty hard to tell for a non-Japanese speaker. I missed them on my first run watching the subs. Only later did I watch the English and have the scene make sense. The dub, at that time, did a better job at conveying the artist's intent than a simple translation did. Context is *the* reason that dubs can convey meaning better than subs.

Isn't the Ultimate Edition going to make the Special Edition scenes optional? Like, they can be turned on or off?

Anyway, I'm not even going to bother arguing this again. As Sakechan said, neither side is going to give an inch, and I'm sick of exposing myself to -- and I'm sorry for being so blunt -- this blatant, childish elitism that Whedon seems to enjoy throwing left & right.

I'm done. Aaron's said his peace. Can this thing please be locked now?

Whedon displays an absolutely horrifyingly ignorant viewpoint on what art is. I pray that there aren't many more out there like him, or this hobby is doomed.

Locked.
