Well, i just finished this show the other day, and i personally liked it quite a bit. But i've also been hearing about... well... some mixed feelings regarding the show. However, i am simply hearing that people just "didn't like it", without such an explanation. I'm just curious to hear some opinions of those who didn't like it, or did like it, but see some key flaws worth mentioning.

I haven't seen Black Cat myself, but the main specific criticisms I hear are "inconclusive ending" and "doesn't follow the manga."

The main criticism I've heard directed toward Black Cat was that it seemed as if the author was deliberately attempting to collect as many common shounen action elements as possible and cram them into the same series and that many of the characters are stolen from other series. The latter might be rejected on the grounds of prior examples not found in shounen series, though I find such reasoning somewhat suspicious. The former is almost certainly true.
But this is directed towards the manga. The anime certainly has to diverge from the manga or cover only a portion of it faithfully, since the manga is 20 volumes, and the anime only 26 episodes. It is, therefore, possible that the anime avoids the former accusation, but from the first 5 episodes, I find that it is not the case: It might not have followed the manga that closely, but it had the same general problems. |

I saw all of Black Cat, and while saying I didn't like it may be incorrect, I certainly can't say I liked it either. I felt it was just very bland all around. Nothing engaged me, I found no real connection to the characters to cause me to actually care much about them or what happened to them, and it was un-original in many ways as well. I can deal with un-original or cliche shows just fine if I care about the characters, but I just never found myself connecting with this show. Those are my thoughts on it anyway.

ah, both rather insightful, i thank you, and i can acutally see both of what Zalis116 and Boomerang Flash said as interesting. For some reason i guess i hadnt' looked at it so much as that (which is rare as i ususaly do), hm... well thanks, i guess i have more interperting to do of the series.

Did you watch it all because you bought it, or for some other reason? I only ask because if you really didn't like it, why go through all of it? I am not saying out of pure boredom I don't find myself doing the same thing. But as much as possible I try to stop nowadays. If something is really not worth watching... do something else. But if you bought it, I can understand a little more why to push through in the hope of getting a little value for the $ you spent. As for me I thought it was "ok" but not great, and while I got up to volume 4 many many months ago I just haven't had the interest to finish. Sometimes I get to a point with a show where I have to be in a certain mood if I get stuck during a run. I do plan to finish eventually. |

Now hold the phone there Xanas, the thing is, if you're watching something and it isn't looking good, it doens't mean you have to stop watching. In my opinion the first 8 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion were rather boring, but i had high hopes for it, so i kept watching and i thought it was pretty magnificent, that is just an example. I just think, that just since there is one thing wrong, doesn't mean that you have to stop watching, but that is just what i think, i do understand how someone can stop watching, and it does depend on what it is that the person doesn't like in the anime, but yeah, you do bring up a good point.

I enjoyed the first volume where the focus is more on Sven than on Train. I really wished that the series would have continued this dual plots with Train and Sven occasionally crossing paths instead of just becoming yet another team. spoiler[I also really enjoyed the Train/Saya relationship and thought killing her off was really powerful, but sadly enough it is rarely referred to again in the rest of the series nor do we get anything quite as moving]. This is the same issue I had with City Hunter which had an excellent start, but quickly degenerated into a long winded and repetitive routine. I feel as though the second ED credits really sums up the atmosphere I wish the series would have taken and I always am moved by the imagery, especially that last shot.
Overall Black Cat begins really promising and seems to have a structure in the first volume that breaks the typical shonen manga mold. Sadly enough as the series continues it starts to feel much like the countless Jump titles out there that involves yet another teenaged orphan (seriously there are too many for me to count) hero who must face off with a series of mini bosses on the path to fight the main boss. |

Thankfully I didn't buy this, I usually only buy something I have seen most or all of, with few exceptions. I was renting this at the time, which I have not rented anime in almost a year, so I saw it a bit ago. I simply like to finish what I start. I have a completionistic nature and it has to be something I find particularly distasteful to stop watching (Green Green comes to mind  ) but something simply mediocre I can always hope it gets better, or something about it will stand out, or at the least, it's one more completed. I certainly don't expect everyone to watch the same way I do, nor would I recommend that way of watching to others, but it's how I prefer to watch.

I rent the anime some weeks ago, I finished all of the episodes and honestly I like the anime, it has a pretty good action, fanservice and a decent story (albeit it's very different from the manga) all in one, so what's to hate?
Though I'm sure that I won't remember about this anime in one or two months from now because it's not a really memorable show, aka the 'Another Standard Shonen Action Anime'. |

Yeah i agree with you Miyashiro, i really would have perfered the whole dual story, where both Trane and Sven meet, if they had doen that, it probably would have been more exciting spoiler[ Becuase after Train went onto the same team, so to speak, as sven then they were just always around each other, and it sort of turned into a typical anime] and you're so right about those orphan characters, there were a lot moer then normal it was kind of funny to think about.
also yeah, i like to finish what i start as well, even if it has a couple of bumps along the way, or if there is an element of the story or the show that i'm really just not liking. But yeah i watched the first like 6 episodes of the series and then i bought it, which i dont' normally do, ususaly its most of the sieres that i view before buying it... so...  I guess i'm a proud owner of Black Cat!

I didn't like Black Cat because
1) In anime Train changed his personality too quickly, in one episode is mysterious and hardly speak and in another his happy-go-lucky, outspoken person. 2) There was many pointless situations, like when Train got small. It was also in the manga but thanks to this they found the profesor whose clone was Eve. 3) Ending was such that I didn't know whether I should cry or laugh. Overall, manga was decent but unfortunately anime was not even as good as manga. |

I also agree with Aylinn i can see where you're coming from... its kind of amusign to think about that too, whether or not one can cry or laugh at the ending, thats a good point... and yeah, he did change rather fast, it was much to early for something like that to happen

There's something about this series that made it bland and boring. There was nothing I had to be excited about when I got into it further because when you read a manga or watch an anime, you want to be excited...but I wasn't. I'm not a fan of any series either where no character development really happens.

I liked the series personally. It wasn't great but I did enjoy it and don't feel like I wasted my time. I really think the dub did a lot to improve my enjoyment of the show, I didn't care for some of the Japanese cast.
