Evil or Very Mad It has been bothering me for a long time that final fantasy (the spirits within) didn't get any awards. I thought the film was amazing, and for it not even to be nominated for best animated feature is a crime. But what worries me most is that this might discourage any future movie firms from investing money into anime/fantasy related films.
Am I the only one upset by this?

I'm mainly upset that they didn't follow really any of the FF games, and tried creating a new story. The Spirits Within story was ok, but there wasn't anything really fantastic about it. Sure the animation was amazing, but... I don't really like 3D animation over 3D, so that's why I don't really care. Anyone know what movies were nominated for the animation academy award that yearr?

I feel the same way about the movie as you do. I haven't played any of the games so when I went to see it I thought the animation was great. But when it was over, I asked my brother what game number the movie was based on, and it wasn't so I stopped caring about it then.

Well, CGI intensive movies haven't been swayed by the lack of success of The Spirits Within. In fact, a retro sci-fi movie in which only incidental props and the actors are "real" is going to debut soon in theaters. The title is "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".

Basic plot? Jude Law plays a swashbuckling pilot in an old prop plane that takes on aliens in spaceships, giant walking robots, and the mysterious disappearance of top scientists while flirting with Gwenyth Paltrow. Also starring Angelina Jolie as a somewhat dominatrix-like British Royal Navy Commander.

There is already the go ahead to make two sequels, and it looks to be hellaciously fun.

FF: The Spirits Within suffered not from its animation or its connection with a video game, but with the fact that its storytelling was absolutely atrocious and its characters were very blase sci-fi cutouts. For all its visual flash and dazzle, it just wasn't a very interesting story and the characters weren't interesting.

Anyone else notices that Final Fantasy franchise having a bit of trouble braking into another mediums. From mediocre anime, to boring movie, it seems they can’t get it right. But I have high hopes for FFVII movie that comes out soon (this year, I believe?). FFVII was my last FF game I played, and my favorite, so I hope movie will be good.

Anyone knows who wrote screenplay for Spirits Within?

Final Fantasy is one oof my favorite series of games and I understand you about the award thing. But has anyone have any refferences to an anime movie that EVER got an award. Because I've never seen one.

And I hope that FF7:AC turns out good because I'm looking foward to it. And if it isn't, I'll say that I'm shafted (this what we say at my school when someone did something wrong or emberassing Anime smile + sweatdrop )

That year the nominees were Monster's Inc., Shrek, and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Shrek was the winner. It was the first year that the animation award was given out.

As for FF, it had alot of things going against it right from the beginning.

First, it was PG-13 and animated. In the US, animation is still largely seeen as kid's stuff, so making a PG-13 animated movie narrows down your potential audience.

Second, it was a sci-fi movie. Sci-fi is a slightly niche market as well, so you narrow down you audience as well.

And finally, it was based on a video game. I think the best video game to movie conversion so far has been Tomb Raider (money wise), and even that didn't do spectacularly well.

So, whether the movie was actually good or not had little to do with its lack of sucess, it had alot of things going against it from the get go.

How do you mean "anime/fanatasy?" Do you mean something like FFVII: Advent Children, or just plain ol' fantasy like Lord of the Rings? I personally haven't seen any of the LOTR movies, but I hear they're masterpeices of fantasmic perfection.

I think Craeyst-sama described it best and that we can only hope something better than Spirits Within comes out (like Advent Children... Crying or Very sad boy, I can't wait, "show 'em my motto" -- Sprite.)

And welcome to the forum roboticservo and _PRINCESS_MONONOKE_! Wink

Pretty much every Ghibli movie wins several international film awards. For people (like me) who only know the winners of the few top awards like the Oscar or Golden Globe that may not mean very much.
