Of course, as has been stated before, some avoid OAV since typically, AV is associated in Japan with Adult Video... a.k.a. porn.

I use OVA because I think the acronym looks prettier, like an egg.
OAV, even if it's more correct in English, comes across in my mind as "oaf".

Sometimes, I say OAV. At other times, I say OVA. And sometimes, I say OAV, but mean to say OVA or OVA and mean to say OAV.
I don't understand why I always switch pronounciations.
And in my opinion, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen is by far my favorite of all time . The worst is Fushigi Yuugi: Eikoden.

I used to say OVA almost exclusively, until I joined this forum and saw that most members refer to them as OAV. Then I tried to make the switch. Now that I know they're no different, I can go back to calling it OVA. It just rolls off my tongue easier.

OVA...ovum...Uma...Oprah...
I prefer OAV. I just can't shake the whole female reproductive cell/egg thing from my mind.

The whole thing is all these OVA stuff is market as such over here. Everything is xxxx OVA or xxxx OVA (xxxx being any title you may fancy). I was beginning to think OAV was a strictly American thing (America being the next largest anime market outside of Japan or south-east asia, I think).
Sometimes I'll be surfing the web looking for anime and stuff and when I come across the term OAV, it's almost always an American fansite or some official website or something.

I've always used OVA myself.
As to the whole OAV OVA thing on american fansites. I have seen it used equally on many fansites. I'm really not sure why some use one while others will use another. Obviously it doesn't matter as they mean the same thing but I've always been curious on the subject

OVA, or OAV, are equal in meaning. An Original Video Animation, or Original Animated Video is a production that is basically for the home video market primarily. That doesn't mean that it wouldn't eventually be broadcast on a channel, but it wasn't produced for broadcasting, just viewing in the privacy of your own home via your player.

AH, you beat me to it..!! And as far as i know the OVA explosion dwindled down post 90's. I missed those eras when alot of Anime was produced direct-to-video as oppossed to today's TV to Video series. IMHO some of the direct to tv series lack the intensity of their OVA counterparts.
But most of the TV shows are very good regardless.

I usually call them OAV's but sometime I just call them OVA's. Either way, in my opinion Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen takes the cake.

I always use OVA, it just sounds so much smoother than OAV. Of coarse, one thing we're not touching on is pronounciation: ova or OO VEE AE. Any opinions? The former is definately easier to say and gets my vote.
