Allright, I have read a lot of reviews, and watched some trailers for this series. I have even seen the first episode thanks to Newtype, but before I start buying it, can anyone tell me their personal opinion on this anime? I have mixed feelings because some of the premise seems cool to me, but some of it seems kind bad. Opinions? Thanks in advance

I personally found it boring, but it gets better in the later episodes. It is very "laid back". Also Kino is a girl and that kind of shocked me. Hermes voice is annyoing too.

Several of the episode storylines are very reminiscent, at least in style, of American and European New Wave science fiction. So, rather than a specific storyline, we just have a series of unconnected "fables"/illustrations of concepts. The animation styles vary between episodes as well, so it's also an interesting exercise in using the animation medium itself creatively. In fact, it's probably the closest anime comes to "experimental" animation...

This seems to be one of those shows that trys to be a little "different". Such shows tend to be little more thoughtful then the average show and are generally not a mega hits.
Instead, they tend to attract a small but loyal following who appreiate it's divergence from the "typical". They tend to get good reviews and have high production values. Very often, they take their time building up the plot. Some examples that come to mind are Gasaraki, Arjuna, Haibane Renmei (an exeption to the "non-hit status), and Key the Metal Idol. If this fit your profile as a fan, you'll probably enjoy it (And based on your "Lone Wolf and Cub" name and past posts, I suspect you are).
All the Best,
Nani?
P.S. Just curious, is Tumbleweed a real place or is it your way of saying you live in the middle of nowhere?

I didn't even know kino was a girl until episode 3. She looked like a guy but her voice was feminine. I thought it was only because the voice was a girl.

I am very greatful to these forums, mainly because they help me make very good decisions on the anime that I buy, so before I say anything else, thank you for all of your helpful information. You're right about me being kind of lonewolf, although that is not where my name comes from. I do tend to follow series that are kind of underground hits(i.e. I love the buffyverse ), so this series does indeed sound like it is right up my alley.
As for my location thing, I do not live in Tumbleweed South Dakota, I live in Rapid City. In high school I was forced to watch channel one news every day. One day they did a special on Pierre, South Dakota (our state capitol). Well anyways, when they showed Pierre's mainstreet on their special, a tumbleweed blew across the road. Everyone in my class laughed at the tv, because it really made us out to be a hick central area, in the middle of nowhere. It's kind of my own personal inside joke. So that's the story behind my location.

Kinos journey is in the upper echelons of my favorites list. I love that show so much I often marathon the 3 volumes I have over and over again, sometimes 3 times a week. Its one of those definitely unique shows, where no real story is attached. However, this sort of anime doesnt require a concrete story, rather intently focusing on a journey with Kino, to various places, seeing various things and racking the living hell out of your brain soaking up all the symbolism and metaphors in every episode. For me thats the best part. It asks fundamental questions about human nature, about technology and philosophy, and even religion. Kino is a hell of an awesome show if you allow yourself to really delve deep into its mysteries instead of seeing it as a no plot waste of time. The second disc is the best IMO, and the 2 part Colliseum episode has plenty enough action if youre a fan of that. In short, I highly recommend this if you like thought-provoking shows like Haibane Renmei and Lain.

It looks like one of those more serious artistic types like Spirited Away.

I only have the first dvd, and I must tell you that I liked that. I haven't gotten around to buying any more of the series, but if Hermes voice annoys you that much, just go with the sub version, it's a ton better. Does anyone know if they ever go into the topic of how Kino became such a good fighter? I know where she came from and all, but does the anime show the rest of the past? Thanks

Oh my goodness...another SD anime fan. I thought I was the only one . LOL. I picked up the first volume today, and checked it out, and I must say that it really did hold my interest very well. I like pretty much everything about it, except for Hermes voice, but it really does not bother me that much. The dub for this series is suprisingly good as well, as is the music. Thanks again for all your input people

Two things,
The more I watch this show the more I like the show even though the two parter in disk two when Kino is drafted into a gladitorial tournament was a little weak. Yes, Firegirl they answer that question.
I would say this is currently the best show out there for "thoughtful fans".
All the best,
Nani?
