Does anyone like the Vampire Hunter D Movies? I think they are very good movies.

I've seen and have them both.

I rated the first one "masterpiece" and rated Bloodlust "very good."

I didn't really like Bloodlust as much as I thought I would. Much of it has to do with the lack of a Japanese language track on the R1 release.

I don't know why I'm so picky, but I just think it would've sounded better in the language it should've been in.

The ending was also kind of cheesy too:

spoiler[ Vampires using spaceships to fly to the moon?]

It could've been better... Confused

I thought Bloodlust was great - loved the art and characters, and the story is alot deeper than you think at first. My only problem was that, like Tony, I rolled my eyes a bit in regards to the end of the Meier/Charlotte subplot. That wasn't enough to ruin the whole movie, though. Anyone who liked it, by the way, should read Sheridan LeFanau's short story "Carmilla" - obviously the inspiration for Bloodlust's main villain. She really does, in fact, have a huge place in early vampire fiction...

I have not picked up the original movie largely on the grounds of hearsay that it's alot more gory (I'm not especially squeamish, but I have limits) and has alot of completely unnecessary fanservice, which would annoy me. I'd give it a look if the Sci-fi Channel or someone else ever ran it again, but I don't think I'll buy it without knowing if I'd be turned off.

I've seen the first vampire hunter d but i only watched part of it and it bored the hell out of me, but when i saw the second one it was awesome i just loved with all that blood and all i just loved it to death well any ways thats what i thought none the less. well i do like vampires and i loved hellsing as well Very Happy Twisted Evil

I didn't care too much for the first one, and the second one was pretty good. But it wasn't anything amazing or anything.

There was only 1 (maybe 2) scenes in which anything unappropriate was shown...at least to my knowledge. And I have seen it alot.

I think it's a GREAT anime and consider it to be one of the MUST-HAVES of Anime.

Bloodlust I haven't seen.

If you're refferring to nudity, there are 2 scenes. One where Doris gets her cross necklace ripped off which coincidently also exposes a breast. And then there's a shower scene, which is blatant enough to explain itself.

As for gore, there's a lot. Limbs getting cut off, impalements, and neck biting (what would you expect? Razz)

You haven't missed much.

D pretty much has to save this girl, but ends up being accompanied by some annoying bounty hunter woman, much like Juubei in Ninja Scroll. Only in Ninja Scroll, I didn't find Kagerou as b**chy (pardon my language.)

The voice acting seemed mediocre and the music was OK, but the art and animation are top notch. I would just rent it if I were you. Although, I might buy it, however, if it came out in Japanese... Rolling Eyes

I still don't think it's that bad. It wasn't enough for them to cut it out when Sci-Fi played it...i think.... hmmmm....

What I don't understand is that there was somehow less blood in Bloodlust. Doesn't quite make sense.

To me, Bloodlust was a much better realization of the imagery and the intricacies of the VHD universe. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is one of the few cases where I've seen a sequel out-do the original in anime.

And, honestly, Meier and Charlotte WERE the movie. Their romance was sweet and tragic, and I for one wish there were more couples in anime like them where their emotions are clear and true as opposed to the usually comedic shyness or aloof distance.

Ah well, I'm a hopeless romantic who cried as the ship took off. Go figure.

Right, right. The the R2 was in English with Japanese subs, but later dubbed in Japanese and put into limited release. I saw who they casted in Japanese, and I REALLY like a lot of those voices.

Ah, sorry. It's just that I'm really enthralled with the Japanese langauge and think the movie would be SO much cooler if it was spoken that way. Anime catgrin

Actually, I think they showed it uncut around the mid 90s on Cartoon Network. It was really late at night, but I think it was uncensored and everything (before the channel became famous.)

I agree, I prefer these character designs that are closer to the originals as opposed to the ones from 1985. The drawings for Bloodlust seemed to fit the intended atmosphere so much better.

Visually, I'd say Bloodlust is a masterpiece of art, but the rest... Well, it's OK. Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I kind of felt that way too, but the ending with the spaceship just didn't make it seem as tragic as it should've been. Though if Meier had died, that would've been the very defention of tragedy, a la Romeo and Juliet. Anime cry
