They changed the political motivations for the movie, but there's a great scene in the book where they discuss how the government enacted the Battle Royale act just because they could. No one spoke up back then because no one cared, and no one spoke out against it when they realized how horrible it was because they'd get killed.

I haven't seen Battle Royale II, but apparently in it Shuya has formed a militia group, and the government sends in another class to take them down. It's not supposed to be very good.

This might help for your first question:

http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/movie/spoilerquestions.html#3

Second question(answer from same site):

It's three years after the events of the original Battle Royale, and Shuya Nanahara is now an internationally-known terrorist determined to bring down the government. His terrorist group, Wild Seven, stages an attack that levels several buildings in Tokyo on Christmas Day, killing 8000 people.

Exactly one year afterward, the government enacts the "New Century Terrorist Counter-Measure Alternative" program, a.k.a. the BRII act, and sends the forty-two students of Shikanotoride Junior High Class 3-B to hunt Nanahara and his cohorts down in their island stronghold. Shiori Kitano, the daughter of the late headmaster of Nanahara's Battle Royale, signs up for the program, to avenge her father.

In order for the government to study the benefits of "teamwork," the new students work in pairs, with their collars electronically linked so that if one of them is killed, the other dies as well. They must kill Nanahara in three days--or die.

Also lots of other BR stuff:

Everyone else seems to of answered your question, but I'll just chime in my opinion of the 2nd movie: It completly sucks. You watch Battle Royale for the gritty reality that was in Lord of the Flies. You don't watch it hoping for some cheesy B army movie. I think I would of been happier off not seeing the sequeal because it ruined some of the characters for me.

Could anyone tell me if they just made the 2nd movie, or is there a sequel book it was based off of?

According to this: http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/merchandise/br2/books.html

There was no sequal novel (there was only a novelized adaption of the movie)

There is more of it then that but I echo the sentiment for reading the book. A frightening thing is, the Japan of Battle Royale novel are motives you could attribute to real world LDP and the Zaibatsu that run the real Japan and it's not too hard to imagine with an "American" version of this. That's when the horror of really hits you.

All the best,

Nani?

spoiler[Battle Royale Novel, Page 223-224:

Seeing how Shuya and Noriko were at a loss for words, Shogo added, "Look, this country's run by a bunch of idiot bureaucrats. In fact you have to be an idiot to be a bureaucrat. My guess is that when this lovely game was first proposed -- some crazy military stretegist probably came up with it -- there was no opposition. You don't want to stir things up by questioning the specialists. And it's terribly difficult to end something that's already been established. You interfere, and you're out of a job. No, worse yet, you might be sent to a forced labor camp for idealogical deviation. Even if everyone were against it, no one could say it out loud. That's why nothing changes. There are a lot of screwed up things in this country but they all boil down to the same thing -- fascism."]

BR is also set in an alternate Earth with the Empire running things as a bureaucracy. It is a commentary on many things, while the second seems more like an attempt to take the edgy BR farther.

What about the PATRIOT Act? Same idea. No one wanted to question the government and BAM! No more Fourth Amendment.

Thanks, Haiseikoh. I don't have my own copy of the book to reference. Although I'm not sure if I would recommend it to people who have seen the movie, it wouldn't have half the impact for someone who knows how everything turned out.

If you have seen the movie, though, the book does go into the characters a lot more than the movie. So I'd recommend the book to anyone.

Its not which is probably partly to do with the fact that the director of BR died so his son took over for BR2.[/code]
