In the encyclopedia genre search, the themes are divided into two sections, one that's always displayed, and one that you have to click to display the rest. What's the criterion/a for which goes where? I thought it was the number of series that have a theme listed, but some of the always displayed have only 3 or 4 series, while some hidden have 7.

The criteria is whether that particular theme has ever been confirmed for any anime. For example, the theme "acrobatics" was endorsed by 12 users out of 12 on Kaleido Star, thus it gets a place in the always-displayed section. The hidden section is more likely to contain incorrect/irrelevant themes entered by people who didn't know any better.
