This topic goes out to all anime fans living in Canada. We need to start bugging Teletoon and YTV to start buying into new anime series'. Sure YTV has Beyblade, Astroboy, Dragon Ball series', Medabots... and the list of "kiddy" anime goes on and on... Zzzz. However YTV just started playing Gundam Seed and Witch Hunter Robin!! This is an awesome breakthrough and I hope that fans respond extremely positively to these shows so that YTV can see how popular "older teen" anime is, so that we might be able to get some more really great anime shows (Fullmetal Alchemist in the future perhaps..!). As for Teletoon, I hope they jump on the bandwagon also, right now I think the only anime series they're airing is Megaman. Teletoon is all cartoons, so I think it really would make sense for them to try and acquire more anime shows. Right now they're airing shows that are horrible! Even though a lot of these shows are for children, the stories are very stupid and no real lesson is learned (even Pokemon episodes, to some extent, teaches kids about values and aspects of life). I want to know what the rest of you Canadians think, and as for Anime DVDs... I think they need to come down in price, after all, they're imported from the states, which adds $5-10 after the currency conversion (for instance Hellsing at HMV goes for 49.99 a volume!), which is pretty painful to my wallet! Anyways, let's talk about ways we can have access to more anime! Here here! =)

I agree. Cartoon Network has an entire block devoted to anime (Toonami) and another which has the more mature animes(Adult Swim). Anime Network is an entire Channel Devoted to Anime. Neither of them are available on cable here in Canada. YTV and Teletoon are the only channels that I've ever seen anime on (Though i heard Dominion Tank Police was on Space once). Witch Hunter Robin, Inuyasha and Gundam Seed are currently the only good anime shows on Canadian TV right now.

The problem is Canada's draconian television policies. They should just let Cartoon Network expand into the country, I am sure CN would be happy to aquire the new market, at least in the well-populated areas.
One question I have is what about satellite in Canada. Is it possible to pick up stations like CN or TechTV that way if you live in Canada? Just wondering. |

i remember 3-4 years ago, teletoon showed at 1-3am Ninja Scroll and that was the only anime. I also remember seeing Princess Mononoke and grave of the fireflies on tv in a french channel (tele-quebec). and YTV, showing gundam seed and witch hunter robin once a week isnt enough...

I live around Toronto and I get the Anime Network but you need to access it through Rogers on Demand (channel 298 I beleive) not a huge, great selection but there is enough to keep me happy. As for teletoon it also shows Card Captor Sakura. I have never watched it because I think its aweful but it's there. Teletoon does need some anime though, I think one time Macross was on teletoon, a long time ago. About the DVD's in Canada NEVER I repeat NEVER buy your anime at HMV it is way overpriced. I recommend going to Best Buy or Future Shop, the same DVD at one of these stores can be $10-20 cheaper then the price at HMV and they have a wider selection from what I've seen.

No, there's no legal way that either of those stations can be picked up. However, since YTV has a lot more potential for anime than CN seems (YTV always airs the original intros and is currently airing SEED uncut at an earlier timeslot than it airs in the US to boot) I'd rather see their anime offers evolve than just watch everything on Cartoon Network. After all, the Canadian and American markets are slightly different; if YTV can realize that and use it to their advantage by airing more shows uncut or getting shows that would never air on American television (ie: Fruits Basket), then the whole idea behind their existence might actually come into perspective. Teletoon, however, isn't budging. I think it's safe to say at this point that they're never going to show anime, so we should probably just leave them alone. However, I think there's a good chance that SPACE might get Stand Alone Complex or Cowboy Bebop in the near future. |

I am so glad too see that there is a group of us here in Canada who really care about anime here and know whats going on. I remember the good days when teletoon had Ninja Scroll,Patlabor,Wings of Hommenise,Dragonball(when it was popular. And then Space was airing an onslought of anime on late nights as well as every saturday at 2:00, ah the good days. As I am happy to see us get the new shows on YTV I still wish we could get more. As was stated before here in Canada most time when anime is shown here it is shown uncut. If you care and would like to know what is happening here in Canada go Pepperidge's site.

It would be incredible if the Space Network got Cowboy Bebop or GitS:Stand Alone Complex, I'll have to do some research about that one Pepperidge to see if it could really happen. But as for Teletoon, like Pepperidge says, they're not really heading toward anime as much as a lot of Canadian otaku's would like them to. HOWEVER, I found out if you go to www.teletoon.com, click on the "Talk" button, then go to "Suggest-a-Show" you can give them the name of ANY show you want (via textbox, not off a list). If we could all band together (or if a few of us repeatedly spam Suggest-a-Show
 ... ) then we might be able to show Teletoon that there is an audience for anime on their network. It's a long shot, but I'm sure if everyone who reads this post suggests any anime show to them they'll notice and might eventually say "Hey, this many people want to see anime shows on our network, let's make some phone calls..." Again, it's a longshot, but we might be able to make a difference, so Suggest-a-Show if you can!

I think that the problem is the CRTC and no matter how many people suggest a show I doubt teletoon will care. Why? I find it odd they have absulutley no anime and took the one they did have Cardcaptors off the air, imagine that not 1 anime not even the kiddie ones like pokemon or yu gi oh.

There only dubbed in canada (part of the time) because it's cheaper (I don't know how a sound booth in canada can be cheaper then one in the states, but it's a fact). I'll try to find the NewType that was talking about that.
As for satalite, the only way we can get american anime is by using an american satalite and grabbing american channels, Horibly iligel, doesent stop half of canada from doing it though (police officers actualy have to ask if your pirating american satalite when ever they happen to be at your house). There is a TechTV in canada, but it doesent get AnimeUnleashed.... ARGH! Movie network plays anime movies sometimes. I'm sure they will get GiTs 2, and Steamboy when they come out (Or in whatever time frame Mnetowrk gets them). For us canadians, that will just have to do... By the way, any americans out there want to sell me their satalite dish? (Kidding) |

Canada always gets screwed. when will the companies realize that we a just as much part of North America as the the US. (but we got more land and resources
 )
not that i care for whats on TV anymore, but it would be good to get more of teen, or older oriented animation on. its all this kiddie stuff they keep playing over and over thats making all the stupid people think that there is nothing to anime but kids stuff so they immedeatly think its a waste of time when it can actually be better, more enjoyable, and more meaningfull then what Hollywood puts out. enough of me compining, its pointelss anyway, noone listens, companies only care about money....... |

And considering we canadians all live on the border of the states and that everything above toronto is a big empty expanse? I can understand why we arnt look at the same as the states eh?
