Fighting dah choppas.
Korean kids cartoon quality CG.
Shun is a girl.

Hasn't this franchise suffered enough?

I'm guessing this was produced in English if even Netflix Japan is streaming that version. I suppose that makes sense given the writing staff.

Yeah, this is definitely not going to be a "manga accurate" adaptation like we were expecting it to be. Oh well, I'll still give it a chance, but at least I know to expect alterations to the story whenever I actually watch this series.

I'm not a fan of CG works, but this specific art direction seems too clean and sterile, which makes me think this is going to be aimed at a general/kids audience. I can't imagine the series having the same level of violence as the original did, with blood and dismemberment. The fact they also changed Shun to a girl leads me to believe this is going to be tooled more for western sensibilities, given Saint Seiya was popular with women because of the boys, and trying to appeal to female audiences with a female character is more inline with how western properties are handled rather than anime.

Ya know, as much as a guy I am about being more faithful to the source material and not a fan of CG and yada yada, I gotta say this trailer wasn't that bad...

I mean...let's face it the original series looks kinda downright ugly at this point, and hey Shun might as well have been a girl with the way he acted and how he looked...

And honestly, I watched the 70 episodes or so that were licensed in the US, and hoo boy did things drag a bit in places...a 12 episode run might be pushing it but the streamlining might make the action better and cut out a lot of the original cheesy 70's anime dialogue.

I have mix feelings on this. While Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac has always been property aimed at children, particularly young boys, there was always a grit in the original anime that gave the illusion that the series was mature. This new animated series feels not only more western, but also toned way down. This show feels very much aim to much younger children, which isn't inherently a bad thing.

Similar to how there are variety of properties based on Superheroes that are aimed at many different age groups, I'm okay for a Saint Seiya show existing that is aimed more towards little children. Being a children's show doesn't mean it can't still be enjoyed by grown-ups, and I really don't mind a more western take on this classic franchise. If I want a more Eastern take, then I would just watch the original show or read the manga. The originals will always exist, and the quality of this new show wont change that.

My concern stems with the fact that a lot of the darker elements of the series will be very toned down, and wouldn't translate well in this new show. Though I think the original series was unnecessarily bloody, I'm afraid that some of the darker story elements that I love from the original series will be completed cut out. This includes Ikki's backstory and notable character deaths.

Shun being woman (at least, I think Shun's a woman) is actually something I personally don't mind. Maybe it's my western mindset and heteronormative upbringing, however I always felt that Shun should have been a woman from the first place. I understand that Shun's femininity was more appropriate in Japan, I just thought Shun always was a step too far. Changing character's gender is not uncommon either, especially when westernizing it; the new Voltron series also changed a once male character into a female. Again, I have a very old-school western mentality, and I totally understand why many people would be upset by this change.

The animation looks cheap, yet as a Saturday cartoon it looks fine. Again, this is show clearly aim at younger children, with more western sensibilities. Does that make it bad? Not necessary. I may not be the target audience for this new show, however that doesn't mean kids won't like it. And, ultimately, that's the most important thing, if kids will like it.

Seiya's voice remembers me of Kyle McCarley or Griffin Burns.

Did any english dub actor said something about dubbing this new Saint Seiya series?

I wonder what sort of reaction they would gotten from Netflix subscribers if the trailer read:

"FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CROSS ANGE"

Because visually I am seeing some similarities in this trailer from bright colors to even seeing the protagonists being attacked by what looks like military equipment (the helicopters).

I dunno, the voice acting sounded kind of eh to me so I actually wonder if they went with anime VA's for this.

Is CROSS ANGE a popular show? I don't know, I haven't watch it yet.

The more times I watch the trailer, the more I like the animation. It isn't the greatest thing ever, but it is more emotive and fluid than anything I've seen in Polygon. This isn't to say I hate Polygon Pictures, in fact I really a lot of their shows. It is just I feel like their animation style is more stagnant.

I feel like a lot of the knee-jerk reactions from this trailer stems from how western and kiddie it looks, and, of course, the whole thing with Shun. While I don't think I am the authority to judge Shun in this new adaptation, I now think this new Saint Seiya show can be a great entry point for young children.

Have a very little brother or young niece, and you want them to get into Saint Seiya? Show them this. Even if this new show isn't the greatest children show ever, most kids will probably still like the colors and the action. Even if this new Saint Seiya isn't for you, it can still be an excellent starting point for any little kids.

Well, this dub seems to have being produced by VSI Los Angeles, so they probably went with anime VA's. As I saw other works of Griffin and Kyle, Seiya's voice really sounded like them.

And the only other time that Netflix worked without a Los Angeles studio for anime was for the infamous A.I.C.O. dub. But this Saint Seiya dub sounds a lot better, like a traditional dub from Los Angeles.

Has Shun been officially confirmed as a girl or is this just an assumption based on the voice and visual? I mean, I also thought that was the case, until Marin appeared with the mask. In the original work, female Saints must use a mask, and Shun is not using one here, so either they removed this rule for this adaptation or Shun is just more effeminate than ever.

I was thinking the same thing. I assumed Shun was a girl in this version base on the voice, and everyone on the comment sections had the same reaction.

From what I can gather, Shun has always been voice by a man (not including flashbacks when he was a kid). So the assumption of Shun being a woman isn't completely unfounded. Base on Shun's look and voice, and I still believe Shun is a woman in this new show. But who knows until we get confirmation.

It's confirmed. The show's story editor/head writer gave a pretty eye roll worthy reason:

Quote:
The big question: "Why change Andromeda?"

This one is all on me.

When we started developing this new updated series, we wanted to change very little. The core concepts of Saint Seiya that make it beloved are so strong. Most of it holds up well even thirty years later.

The only thing that concerned me: the Bronze Knights with Pegasus Seiya are all dudes.

Now the series has always had fantastic strong dynamic female characters, and it reflects in the tremendous number of women who are passionate about the Seiya manga and anime.

Today the world has changed. Guys and girls working side-by-side is the default. We're USED to seeing it. Right or wrong, the audience could interpret an all-male team as us trying to make a STATEMENT about something.

And maybe 30 years ago seeing women punching and kicking each other wasn't a thing. But today? Not the same.

I don't think Eugene realized that gender bending a character is very much a statement in its own right. Let alone it being the extremely effeminate one. Don't ask why Marin's still in a mask if lady saints are no biggie in this version.
