I've seen people say that they are hoping the Virtual Boy games will be playable without the peripheral, and they seem to be unaware that those lenses are part of how the whole thing works. I would be very surprised if Nintendo sold the head sets, only to later go back and make a 2d version. Heck, they are coming out with other colors for less eye strain, but not until after launch. They'll sell however many sets to people who are not only ok with hardware that requires a subscription service to function, but one that was notoriously bad, and then move on and happily collect ongoing fees for people who want to pay to keep paying to use it.

Whatever life Virtual Boy will have on the Switch 2, it will be limited. Here today, gone tomorrow.

The most frustrating thing about this Virtual Boy revival is that it would be trivial from an emulation standpoint to have an option to display the games in 2D by just using one of the eye outputs. Hell, we know Nintendo is capable of doing this because that's the only way they have game footage from the promo videos. But no, everyone has to buy that ridiculous piece of plastic (or absurd cardboard box option) and jam their faces into it to play. I barely ever play my Switch outside of its dock, and I'm certainly not about to change that for this "experience."

(Sidenote, if you get the chance watch the Slow Mo Guys' recent video on how the original's display works, it's a fascinating piece of tech.)
