Trivia:

This movie was originally meant to be the end of the series, but it turned into an alternate ending when demand for the original show increased after Star Wars.

In the making of this film, Leiji Matsumoto had refused to work on the final scene as a result of conflicting views between him and Yoshinobu Nishizaki about the ending itself. While the ending itself was meant to reflect on death and sacrifice (concepts that Nish himself valued), Matsumoto perceived the Yamato crew as children who deserve the right to live on and hated the idea of Capt. Okita (whom Matsumoto modeled after his own father) convincing a young person (namely Susumu Kodai) to give up his own life.
