NANA's Ai Yazawa Draws Commercial Artwork for JUJU's Latest Single

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Manga artist Ai Yazawa has created new artwork for singer JUJU's latest single Iiwake. Yazawa's character artwork was used for the album's latest commercial. It starts out in monochrome and is slowly colored in over the course of the commercial.

Yazawa said she received a request to create the art, so she listened to the song and its lyrics on repeat all day until the point that she could sing along. She then went to her desk, but thought that she may have to refuse the request even if she wanted to do the artwork. The image then appeared to her so she decided to accept the request.

Yazawa drew a mini-manga featuring characters from her series Tenshi Nanka ja Nai and Gokinjō Monogatari last year. Yazawa put her Nana manga on hiatus in 2009 while being treated for an unspecified serious illness. She was released from the hospital in 2010 and revealed that she did not know when or if she will return to working again. She published a new "Junko's Room" chapter, her first new manga in over three years, in 2013. The January 2015 issue included a NANA calendar with new images drawn by Yazawa.

Singer JUJU performed the ending theme for the Mononoke anime series in 2007 and the third ending theme for the Star Blazers 2199 anime series.
