Japanese Internet service provider NEC BIGLOBE announced on Wednesday that it will end services for its Sugoi Books app for Android devices on August 7. The app currently offers manga to users in both Japanese and English.
Books bought before August 7 will remain permanently available on devices that users used to download them. However, the ability to search for and purchase titles, re-download purchased books, and update the application will become unavailable after August 7.
Users will be unable to purchase new points after June 28, and all points must be used by August 7. People who previously bought points through the app will receive 300 free points as an appreciation gift.
NEC BIGLOBE planned to expand the app's library to include 50,000 books by the end of 2012 with a goal "to become the largest manga provider for users of smartphones and multimedia devices." Sugoi Books extended its availability into Canada last November.
The app added Mizuna Kuwabara and Kachiru Ishizue's Ilegenes, Nanae Chrono's Peace Maker (Shinsengumi Immon Peace Maker), and Mayumi Azuma's Elemental Gelade manga in April. Its lineup also includes titles such as Appleseed by Masamune Shirow, Stop!! Hibarikun! by Hisashi Eguchi, Kaze no Jin by Hiroshi Motomiya, the Transformers series, the Locke & Key series, and the True Blood series.
