Japanese Box Office, June 7-8

2nd Persona 3 film debuts at #9

Thermae Romae II, the second live-action film adaptation of Mari Yamazaki's Thermae Romae manga, fell from #6 to #8 in its seventh weekend. Hiroshi Abe is returning as the time-travelling bath architect Lucius Modestus along with Masachika Ichimura as Hadrian, Kazuki Kitamura as Ceionius, Kai Shishido as Antonius, and Aya Ueto as Mami Yamakoshi. The film also ranked #8 on Box Office Mojo's chart and earned 60,351,604 yen (US$591,219) on 340 screens for a new total of 4,203,163,198 yen (US$41,185,283).

Persona 3 the Movie #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream opened this week at #9. Akira Ishida returns to voice protagonist Makoto Yūki in the second film based on the PlayStation 2 game. In the game's story, there is a hidden time known as the "Dark Hour" that exists between one day and the next when all movement in the town stops. During this time, a group of high school students fight terrible creatures called Shadows by summoning Personas. The film did not rank on Box Office Mojo's chart.

Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Gachinko! Gyakushū no Robo Tō-chan (Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Fight! Robo-Dad's Counterattack) stayed at #11 on Box Office Mojo's chart in its eight weekend and earned 32,957,284 yen (US$323,047) on 314 screens for a new total of 1,745,332,021 yen (US$17,101,880). In the kindergartner "Shin-chan's" 22nd movie, his father comes back from a massage with the body of a robot, a form that is involved in a conspiracy of restless Japanese dads. The film guest stars Emi Takei and Crocket and features a theme song by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

The seventh and final volume of Mobile Suit Gundam UC fell from #8 to #13 on Box Office Mojo's chart in its fourth weekend and earned 28,767,797 yen (US$281,866) on 35 screens for a new total of 462,244,294 yen (US$4,529,056). The 90-minute episode, titled "Niji no Kanata ni" (Over the Rainbow), concludes the series that adapts Harutoshi Fukui's Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn novels. The series began in 2010 and also has an English dub.
