We all have that one boss that absolutely gets on our nerves right? I feel like that's a relatable thing that almost everyone either has gone through or will go through at some point in their lives. If there's one thing I like about this story, it's that winding tension that comes with working under somebody who very much gives the impression that they do not care about how hard you work, they only care about results. However, I feel like a lot of people also know at least one person out there who is incredibly mean, but they're just handsome enough that there's a feral part of your brain that makes you think that it's OK. Or very least, that aggression mixed with good looks can awaken a sort of sexual tension.
That's probably the thing that My Loving Robot does the best: it builds off of the stress that our main character feels in the workforce towards their boss. There are even some later chapters that open up the possibility of a sort of S&M dynamic as a form of stress relief. Think of it as the equivalent of typing out an email calling out your boss, but never sending it except instead of typing out that email, you are contemplating having sex with a robot that just happens to look a lot like your boss. There's a lot of humor and relatability in this idea, and I was getting a kick out of a lot of these chapters despite the incredibly slow burn. Don't go into this thinking that you are going to get a lot of the hot and heavy stuff early on because outside of a brief flash forward, you are not seeing anything even remotely sexual outside of the occasional brief fantasy for a while.
That might be one of the biggest knocks against this story outside of its incredibly basic presentation. The story feels like it moves at a snail's pace with chapters passing by that have barely any development between them. This does tie into the fact that there aren't really a lot of visual flourishes that move the story forward. In fact, a lot of the layout of these chapters is just portrait shots and establishing shots. There aren't massive amounts of dialogue or anything creative transitioning us from fantasy or reality. The fact that there is apparently a fantastical or supernatural component to the overall story revolving around the sex bots existence itself yet everything feels so sterile and bland is weird. I could speed through chapters, not feeling like I was missing anything which is not a great thing, especially when the story is trying to establish this sense of winding tension with our protagonist who looks like she's going to snap and just ride that sex robot all the way home any minute.
This gets into my final problem with the story and that is the target of our protagonist's affection himself. Leaning into the stern and mean boss archetype is fine despite it being a very tired trope. But there really isn't much to this guy outside of his occasional basic kind action. In fact, the story spends more time just hovering on the same pensive look that he always gives all of the time than actually giving him any meaningful presence. There is a gag in the series about the similarities between the boss and the sex robot but those comparisons only highlight just how robotic the boss actually is. Maybe that's the point but the story is clearly building something up with him that is taking forever to get to it which also conflicts with the tension being generated for our main character.
Overall, I see glimmers of potential here and a solid hook for relatability, but there are too many bland elements that hold it back from reaching any type of meaningful intrigue or engagement. It's a story about an office woman accidentally ordering a sex robot. I should be entertained or stimulated by that story and I am barely feeling either of those things after over a dozen chapters. If you can't hook me in with a setup that easy, then I think your story might have bigger problems.
