how did they (who ever choses the voice actors) get billy bob thorton, claire danes on princess mononoke? did the movie do extremely well in japan, i thought it was amazing but am a little confused how they got these "big stars" to do voices in anime.

It was distributed by Disney, and those guys have the money and power to hire whoever they want when it comes to voice acting.

For the record, Princess Mononoke was, at one point, the #1 grossing movie of all time (of any type) in Japan. To my knowledge it has only since been beaten out by Titanic and Spirited Away. Yeah, Disney's responsible for pulling in the big names; they did the same for Spirited Away, although the latter was, IMO, a much better dub. (Mononoke's dub was very uneven in quality.) Other anime titles which have seen significant-name American actors in vocal performances include both Armitage III movies (Poly-Matrix had Keither Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkeley, Dual Matrix had Juliette Lewis) and Steel Angel Kurumi (Claudia Black of Farscape fame). Anyone know of any other anime titles with "name" American VAs in the dub? |

Mark Hamill, the famous Luke Skywalker of Star Wars, plays in Laputa: Castle in the Sky as Muska and in Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind as the Mayor of Pejite. Patrick Stewart, best known for his role of Captain Picard in Star Trek and Professor Xavier in X-Men, plays in Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind as Yupa. I just learned that Neil Gaiman did the Mononoke sceenplay in English. I wonder if Miyazaki specifically requested him based on the Sandman's reputation...

I think it might not be as hard as we think to get name actors to do voice work. A few of them these days seem to want to give it a go at least once for some diversity in their resume, while others might actually be genuine animation fans. Also, in the cases where they do work for animation suitable for all audiences, many of them jump at the chance to do something that they think their young relatives will enjoy - particularly if the younger members of their families can't watch alot of their work because it's only suitable for adults.

I read that Miyazaki didn't request him, but he did back him when dealing this the Coporate types who basically almost killed it. All the Best, Nani? |

Gaiman did the first draft of Mononoke, then they hired someone else for rewrites, who screwed the whole thing up. They then brought in Gaiman late in the process to fix the script.
Gainman says in interviews the script would have been better had they asked him to do the rewrites all along instead of coming back to him in the 11th hour. |

Well, it was handled by Mirimax, so you would assume they would get a good voice cast for their first anime dub. As for Gainman, he is mostly the guy to call for great ADR direction. He has also worked on Petshop of Horrors, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and pretty much all of Urban Vision dubs. I heard a rumor that Mark Hamil is working on bringing over some new anime to America. |

Actually, that's not Gaiman, it's Jack Fletcher who you're referring to. He not only did the aforementioned dubs that you mentioned (as well as Mononoke), but he did the ones for Disney's dubs of Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky, both of which are just as good (in my opinion anyway--yeah I know some folks have issues with these two dubs, but I love them just as much as the other Disney Ghibli dubs.)
I think that may be the new Robotech movie or something. I definitely need to catch that, especially since I really enjoyed his performances in Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky (his Muska is especially impressive, so much so in fact that he gives the original guy who played him a run for his yen). He really should do more voice acting in Anime dubs, he is truly talented as a voice actor. -Jon T. |
