So what do manga/manwha do you think have the best manga art that represent the manga. For me, It's Priest and it's done by Raymand Swanland (he's not the mangaka). The art is very dark, grim and realistic and almost bring the manga to life. If you read the manga and look at the cover, you can imagine what it would look like if it was more realistic. The Priest logo is stylist with the unique font too.
   
Other good cover is Ragnarok. Each volume has a stylish pose of a different character. The art for it is amazing detail and the color is vivid. The ragnarok logo stand out a lot because of the color outline and stylish font. 
One more cover I want to mention in which it caught my attention and made me right buy interested in buying was Sgt Frog. The drawing is very cute and colorful, plus the foil made the cover stand out. Manga cover that dissappoint me: Initial D. The cover just has car and I guess that's what the anime is about. But the cover looks generic and many of the same car will apear in multiple cover. Boring!!! Compare to the anime cover the manga cover gets a thumbs down. 
(you see a lot of cover similar to this) Try not to just list your cover manga but explain why you like it too. To post image, right click the image (off another website) and go down to properties and copy (ctrl C) the "location" code/url. I like the original Japanese artcovers of GTO, they look like something out of a fashion magazine. They're very realistic and artistic, I really hate the US artcovers though. I feel Tokyopop butchered art at it's best and replaced it with something cheap.

I think its imortant to really stand out. An easy way is to use sex appeal, like Ai Yori Aoshi volume 1 did. I'm sure alot of readers are attracted to a yaoi book more if the cover has some sex appeal on it.
Of late, I've been impressed with Chrono Crusades cover art. The way the colors blend together really catches my eye. I like what Viz has done for Bleach. 
The art to a simple white background makes it really stand out. The same with Vagabond. I've liked Blade of the Immortal's covers ever since I started reading them, but the last two take the cake in my opinion. Autumn Frost's cover perfectly mirrors its content: wild and firery. I can just see the rage and anger on Magatsu's face. 
Mirror of the Soul really captures Makie's tragic character well, and the green background sets it apart from alot of things that are out. On the other hand, I don't like alot of the cover art fot Oh My Goddess!. It's not that its bad, but the Japanese covers (especially the new ones) are just so beutiful. Hopefully in the new format the original covers will remain. |

I think some of you are giving the American companies a little too much credit on this. Example: Bleach's English cover is pretty much an exact replica of its original Japanese version.
I prefer the original Japanese covers over ones fashioned by the English company, mainly because it's what the manga-ka wanted to cover their manga. Lettering wise though, I have to admit some of the English companies do a great job on the covers. Blade of the Immortal and Priest, if those are titles specially designed for English, look awesome. An extremly poor example of cover design can be seen with with Viz's release of Angel Sanctuary. It makes me want to gag, and I cringe every time I see it. |

I really like the covers to the Mars manga (both the original and tokyopop versions). The artwork is superb.

Agreed. Even though the TP version was okay (they use the same art, just different layout), the Japanese one are funky.  vs TP's

I think the cover art for this series is well done too. However, her dress is a different shade of blue in each one. It's such a small detail but annoys me! The most beautiful art work would be the Alice 19th covers. I find them just stunning. Also, like Bleach, I was attracted to Desert Coral and Your and My Secret because of the simplicity of their covers. It really made them stand out. |

I must say that I really like the Fruits Basket manga covers. They're so simple with the one character sitting in some pose, that that's what makes it attractive.

So far the ones that I have liked the most have been the Aria manga covers (Barenes & Noble listing) and the Ah! My Goddess covers. Most of the other mangas that I have (such as Battle Angel Alita) look nice, but not enough for me to really impress me.

I've started to get the Japanese versions of some of the titles I like.
I've already gotten the complete Bastard! collection, and I must say, Viz needs to quit editing the covers, because they look nicer the way they look on the Japanese versions. |

You do make a good point but what's the original "intend" of cover in japan. Because most mangaka are drawing for an anthology and it's collected in Graphic novel forum by the companie...do the companies ask the mangaka to draw a new cover, or used several art that the mangaka had lying around. If you notice, a lot of cover jut have a simple charcter in front and has nothing no event in the manga. I think sometimes the companie just grab a bunch of art/character scetch and use it for a cover. (hot gimimick?), but that's just me. Do the mangaka take it upon himself to do the cover for the graphnic novel? I know most manga cover follow the japanese. |

Yes, it's the manga-ka's intent to have the cover look like that. It's not just recyled art, at least it's not most of the time. The manga-ka does the jacket art quite a while before the first publishing, and they do design it. It has to go through the editor's approval first, but they do create the image for the cover. They aren't just for release for an anthology, they're releasing it with it being put into tankubon format in mind as well. That's why tankubon usually have little extras, like character stats, artist discussions on the last couple pages, extra art, or omakes where adds went in the magazine release. Take a look at the artbooks of your favorite manga and you can usually see the full color image, as well as the original pencil sketch of the cover art. Hot Gimmick was an extremly poor example to bring up. The first 6 or so volumes follow a pattern of a closeup of a character, and a color scheme. It's not some random picture just pulled out of the manga. It also wasn't art from the original magazine release. |

It depends sometimes US sometimes not. I definetly like most prefered the japanese manga's of initial D (not because of covers though)

My favorite manga covers are
Detektive Conan (German Cover) 
the japanese Hikaru no Go COver 
I also like the German Get Backers Cover 
and finally I like the all the Tokyopop Germany COvers (look at www.tokyopop.de if you want to see them  )
