I am at that anime stage now, where I am starting to enjoy the comical anime's rather than the action series which first drew me into anime (Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, etc). I have seen several people refer to Love Hina and use it as a series to compare other series to. I have read the blurb on Love Hina and done some research on it, but I would rather receive information from everyone in the forum, because I believe that I can receive better info. here than through reviews.
So...I was at Best Buy the other day and saw the entire series of Love Hina and I would like to know, how good it really is. Is it really worth buying, or just watching once? Any info. or anyone’s opinion would be greatly appreciated. |

It's okay I suppose, but the manga is infinitely better, both in story and in art (IMO)

Love Hina is absolutely terrible, to be blunt. It's the same poorly-written joke over and over again for twenty-six episodes, almost NO likable characters, constant pathetic fanservice setups, and pretty much zero plot & character development (well...none that's worthwhile, anyway). It's vapid, irritating, and the worst part is that it caught on enough that producers decided it would be the model for every harem anime to follow (a genre that, before Love Hina, at least offered a few decent gems like Tenchi Muyo!, Urusei Yatsura, & Oh! My Goddess).
I suggest checking out the titles I mentioned in parenthesis and bypassing Love Hina entirely. Read the manga if anything, but the anime's a complete waste of time (aside from the shockingly watchable Christmas Special). |

The manga is also lame. I can see why people claim it's better than the anime, but not by much. The writting is poor, and even though Akamatsu is a skilled artist, his page layouts are some of the worst out there. It has moments that are fun to read, but it almost always resorts to the same lame "flash panties/pummel Keitaro" joke over and over. Like Nagisa said, check out those other series, in particular Oh Mt Goddess!. Haven't seen the movie or OVA, but the manga is exellent (wouldn't really consider it harem though, since there's no fanservice and only one girl who loves K1).

Love Hina is a "gateway" anime. If you're fairly new to anime, you will probably enjoy it and think it's really funny.
However, if you've been around the anime block a few times, it's *much* harder to enjoy it because as Nagisa said, it's the same stupid gags over and over again, with your typical loser hero surrounded by a harem of abusive women. So if you're going to watch Love Hina, might as well do it now while you're still naive about comedic anime and harem shows. |

I remember the first time I watched love hina I enjoyed it a lot, and the second time I watched it, I still enjoyed it but as previously mentioned the gags did get kind of lame. I do recommend it though it’s worth it, it doesn’t really get boring there always doing some wacky or zany thing. I wish I was the manager of the Hinata apartments.

Love Hina is one of the more modern Harem anime series and since it was one of the first harem anime series to become popular over here, it's used as a benchmark when looking at harem anime (which is generally considered lame, but I'm sure someone will be able to do something good with it, like they did in Vandred).
It's worth watching . . . once. I'd consider it well worth renting, but be warned. It's like the other said: same old jokes over and over again. Thing is that if you have a developed love of slapstick comedy (three stooges, tom & jerry, Roadrunner & cayote, etc.), then you'll enjoy the lame jokes for longer, because that's usually what ensues: slapstick. Plus, the fanservice isn't that bad, it's just that it gets old after a time if you're well into anime. I wouldn't watch love hina again, but I enjoyed it the first and second times I saw it. Definitely worth renting if you can find it. I would NOT put it on my buy list, however. |

However, if there *is* one Love Hina you watch, it should be the Christmas special. It's a very touching story, and loads better than the series.
But whatever you do, stay away from Love Hina Again. Just trust me. |

BAH! Don't listen to that  . Love Hina: Again is perfectly fine. Yeah, I agree some of the fanservice is a bit overboard, but the ending makes it all worth it  .

Love Hina Again wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so rushed and fit the manga context better. The only thing I liked about Love Hina again was the artwork. Other than that, the planning for how it was done was just weak. (Consider the payoff you get in the Love Hina Christmas special... then watch Love Hina Again - there isn't really any room to have both, and the Christmas special is written better.) This is why I'll stick with the manga... sure, the manga isn't as good as some others, but I enjoyed the manga far better than the anime. I suppose I was lucky to see the anime first, but once I started reading the manga, I hated the anime - I guess I'm just drawn in by Akumatsu's art style, and it proves to have a bit more substance (not a great deal more, but still...) than the one-trick pony the anime tends to be. |

It strays from the manga and puts more focus on weird jokes and storylines that don't show up... the anime has more filler.
To top it off, the anime is incomplete... While the manga maintains some continuity and has a decent finish with a payoff the anime just goes off in left field and never really regains its footing. I also found the general character growth etc. to be much weaker in the anime. One other thing I noticed is that when Love Hina first came about, the industry was just really starting to get into the digital realm, and it felt like they experimented with this some. I also like the art (and fanservice) to be better in the manga, but that's just my opinion. |

Love hina is a good series if you are just getting into anime. But i was enjoying it for a while but adventually it justs get old. If it wasnt the same gags and jokes over again and again. But i do like the connection between.. Ohh shoot i forgot their names but the Guy and Girl that are trying to get into the same school.

I'm in the same boat as Nagisa and Kagemusha, except I'm sort of the ranting lunatic in the brig.
Love Hina destroyed everything that the romantic comedy genre in anime had accomplished since Urasei Yatsura's introduction. It betrayed standards of character depth and story quality set by landmark series like Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, Oh! My Goddess, the Tenchi Muyo OAV's, and Urasei Yatsura. The greatest asset to the romantic comedy genre was likable, engaging characters that the viewer could empathsize with. The stories, then, were able to focus inwards and let us explore the characters' personalities and watch them grow throughout the series' length. This led to an incredible array of memorable moments that would bring out all manner of emotion. It also led to series with incredible lasting potential, so much so that some characters like Belldandy, Lum, and Ryoko have become icons of anime. Love Hina, however, has no such quality. Its characters are flat and grow uninteresting rapidly. They don't grow as the series continues, and certainly it never becomes easy to empathsize with them. It's slightly ridiculous, but thanks to Ken Akamatsu's total lack of talent it's easier for us to identify with the grandson of a Shinto priest who turns out to be the lost prince of a far away empire in the stars then it is to identify with a regular schmuck who just wants to get into college. Don't bother with Love Hina, get yourself any of the grand classics of romantic comedy anime, and while you're at it, hit Ken Akamatsu with a nine iron. |
