In 1985 an English dub of Nausicaa was released in North America by New World Video. Believing that Nausicaa could not be properly marketed in the United States as it was, New World cut a large amount of the film and re-wrote the story, creating a much more juvenile film. This English version was then released under the name "Warriors of the Wind" and was distributed on VHS by Orion Home Video for several year (until 1995 when the license expired).
Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli were horified by the changes made to the movie.

I beleive we've been through this before- a new English dub, produced under Disney's wing with stars such as Anna Paquin, Uma Thurman, and Patrick Stewart (a great thespian) was produced, and released just today. Warriors of the Wind is NOT a prime example on how dubbing is done today, and by continuing to think that you are simply proving your ignorance. Very, VERY few dubs are ever produced like that, over the years and years dubbing has been around. Countless companies such as ADV, Geneon, FUNimation, Media Blasters, CPM, Disney, and what not, create accurate dubs to accompany bi-lingual UNCUT DVDs which contain all original Japanese footage. Get your head out of the 80's PLEASE. (I mean shitting jesus, that example is TWENTY YEARS OLD!)

Here's a proof. There's so many examples,

Another thing : in dub releases, you don't have the difference between -chan, -kun, -san, -sama or the difference between boku, watashi, watakushi, ore, and so on. Then you don't know relations between characters.

All are easily translateable as little, lil', my friend, sir, my honour, mr, miss, mrs, ms, kid, and even in certian circumstances such as Azumanga Daioh, where Chiyo is left as "Chiyo-chan" in the English dub simply because there was no real natural way to work around it. Boku, Watashi, Ore, all of that, are replaceable with "I am", "you are", "I", "you", "this", and what not. While my Japanese is not perfect, such simple, basic grammatic things such as those are so easily translatable, and do not hold this whole "intricate deep meaning" you probably associate with the Japanese language.

While sure, there are things in Japanese that can have several meanings, it's not impossible to not just stick with one and run through. If what you are describing now is a problem for dubs, it would also be a problem for translation in general. Translating native English into Japanese also creates the same problems.

I just can't beleive you actually thought that was a justifable argument. You must be really holding onto desperate strings.

Just because it's small doesn't mean it isn't there.

Guess Kawajiri made a decidedly huge fuckup when he decided Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust should be in English first. I bet the 2 Million otaku in Japan must be pretty shitty fans for not watching Anime with subtitles. I mean, Miyazaki isn't worth dick considering he prefered the French dub of Porco Rosso over the original Japanese.

But hey, what the fudge do any of them know compared to some people on an Internet forum?

You're right : anime-fans must wait 20 years to have a good dubbing. That's really cool... Rolling Eyes

Now, I understand why you watch dub release : boku, watashi, watakushi and ore are all replaceable by "I"... Laughing

The most significant example of this "intricate deep meaning" is Saikano when Su-chan says "boku" in place of "watashi" although his age.

Warriors of the Wind, by all accounts and measures, was a financial failure and was never well received anywhere. Even if Warriors of the Wind hadn't been made, it would have still taken as long for the proper Nausicaa to come out on DVD. Warriors of the Wind had no relevance to the DVD of Nausicaa.

One of the very vast and minor implications that for some reason, should now condemn all dubs for eternity? An annoying Gonzo show, with a lolita complex? Let me ask you, did they keep the "Boku" and "Watashi" in the English subtitled version you watched? One example, against hundreds of Anime translated into English which still keep the original intended relationships, significance, and whatever the hell else that comprises a character. You don't need to hear someone say "blahblah-sama" to realise "OH HEY! HE REVERES/RESPECTS HIM!". That's just silly.

(lets also add that I do not know a whole lot of Japanese, and whatever words that need to be translated can be translated. This has been done for hundreds of years across hundreds of languages, and the implications of such translation that you bring up would not only affect English dubs of releases, but also subtitled works, books, magazines, and god knows what else. Such simple, key grammatic particles- if they were complicated for translation, would make Japanese virtuall impossible to translate into English in any way or form. But hey, with the constant stance that dubbing has and the somewhat decent reception is has, along with the fluidity of subtitle translation, I'd say the problems that are bought up are easily dealt with.

Or as I like to call it, "I can't respond with an actual argument, so I'll try and take a high ground, despite the fact that I actually lost. SO I'll try and save face". I'll be perfectly happy to go back to G.I.Joe, so long as I don't have to share a fandom filled with bigoted, stereotypical pretencious nitwits like yourself. (Guess what Anime is, asshat? Cartoons made in Japan. )

(the translation of Japanese is never as complicated as you think. I don't like Saikano. Dubbing in a commercial and ratings sense serve as much if not more of a purpose that subtitled releases. You cannot read properly, not can you even construct a decent argument that doesn't extend till twenty years ago)

You wrote that Saikano is "an annoying Gonzo show, with a lolita complex". I must admit that "stereotypical pretencious nitwits" goes for you as well Laughing Laughing Laughing

The entire show is a sookfest, and I shouldn't have to humble myself to the likes of you by including "oh in my humble honest opinion that is mine to keep!".

Perhaps if you had an argument that could stand on two legs? Perhaps trying that instead of clinging onto "OH YOU HATE THIS SHOW, SO ILL JUST LAUGH OK BYE BYE".

Laughable.

(and how am I pretencious? I'm not the one claiming if someone is a true fan or not, or thinking that the Japanese language is some deep, mysterious untranslateable scribe?)
