TCG gamers in Costa Rica are facing attacks from the local media due to a "satanic possesion" that some high school students were supposed to experience while they were playing the Oujia and Magic: The Gathering. You can read the news (In spanish, sorry) here http://www.diarioextra.com/2005/abril/12/sucesos03.shtml

The main tv channels also reported that the Magic cards used by the students may have influence the students and made them behave in "demoniatic ways", some reporters even call Magic and Yugi Oh! "satanic games".

The histeria that the event has spread throughout the country has gotten so high, that the Ministry of Education is about to ban the cards from high schools.

Right now, in every school of the country, the teachers most check every student backpack searching for guns, drugs, pornography or other ilegal objects, and TCG´s as Magic and Yugi Oh! could be included in the black list soon.

It does look like they were playing Oujia, Yugi-Oh, or some other TCG, because the article mentions going to the cementary, which I guess some people do for Oujia, and "puntos de vida" which translates to "points of life" or "life points" (sound familiar?). It could be that the professor was just trying to teach them a fun past time, but after the accurances, they now label this mysterious game as "satanic". It could just be a coincidence, or the kigs are actually doing PCP or another hard drug but don't admit to it. What they could have been experiecing were withdrawal symptoms, or it's just my imagination running away again. But they should find and elimanate all possibilities before going so far as to banning all TCG. Anyway, what do ya'll think?

That was one possibility I also thought of.

Oh, so that's why my little brother grows horns whenever he plays with his Yu-Gi-Oh cards!

EDIT: Some Random Idiot- Point taken, let me be more specific...
Anyways, is Costa Rica primarily catholic? It certainly sounds like something the fanatical Catholics would cook up. Rolling Eyes

Huh... strange. Why is it only in costa rica? High school kids in Costa Rica so engrossed with trading card games that it's thought to be some kind of demonic possesion...

Oh and uh... El Oso, yes Costa Rica is primarily Catholic, and mind that there may be Catholic members on this board...

A few years ago, the main Bishop of Mexico (I forget his name) also said that the Pokemon TCG was devilish, evil, and corrupted minors.

In today´s newspaper there is another article about the "possesion" case. It seem that some smart guys from the Ministry of Education found out that the cards are not evil at all... They blamed the family and school problems for the bad behavior of the students... You can read the news here: http://www.nacion.com/ln_ee/2005/abril/14/pais4.html

From my point of view it was a circus made up by the local media, that is always looking for some juicy news to sell to the stupid people that love to belive in stupid stuff like "satanic possesions"...

The newspaper that i mencioned in the first post is well know for publishing "yellow press" and sadly, it is the most read newspaper in the country., and many people buy what these "journalists" write there.

The second one is the most serious newspaper in the country, and at least try to give a more professional view of the information. Sadly again, many people in this catholic country, rather prefer to belive the yellow press than the real press...

Obviously the critics of TCG have never played AD&D.
AD&D player are true devil worshippers.

TCG players can't even figure out a D20, let alone become satan's servants.
