I just spent some "quality time" with the first episode of the new mecha anime Sousei no Aquarion, and I can report that it deserves to be nominated for "Most cliché-ridden anime of 2005".
Let's see.... There's a race of "fallen angels", giant enigmatic mecha beings that are inimical to humanity.... gee, where have I heard that before? Where indeed? There's a bunch of technobabble about higher dimensions and quantum levels and other gibberish that would make even a Star Trek script-writer cringe. There's the obligatory bunch of kids piloting mechas that cluster together to form a larger mecha, for no good tactical reason - and shouting out silly commands whenever they execute a tactically obscure maneuver. Oh, all right, never mind all that, those are a staple of the mecha genre... removing any of that would be like taking the panty shots out of harem anime. But, as if to point out the sheer derivativeness of it all, there's even a title that sounds like somebody tried desperately to come up with something original, and gave up - choosing instead to go with an amalgam of Shin Seiki Evangelion and Soukyuu no Fafner. Hey, the animation quality is acceptable, so far. But dear Lord, couldn't they have found at least a smidgeon of originality somewhere? - abunai |

I figured about as much. There hasn't been much in the way of good new robot anime in recent years (depending on how far back you wanna go), aside from Godannar and New Getter Robo. And heck, one of them's a remake.
No dissing on shouting out stupid attack names. >:| Looking at the official site, they seem to have adapted the "three jets that can combine into three different robots depending on formation" formula started by Getter Robo way back in the day. Only Aquarion's robots are...boring, and don't look that different from each other aside from color. Woo hoo. |

Judging from your "creative writing" you are too old to watch mecha. No offence intended.
I can refrain from analyzing the shows I watch, but it is hard to derive enjoyment from any show that is ridden with nonsense. Especially if this nonsense in question happens to have no artistic qualities. So I would, for example, watch mecha if it features exceptional animation style even though I dislike the genre and the show altogether. |

None taken. I don't quite agree with you, though - nor do I entirely disagree. However, I'm pretty sure the legions of Evangelion fans will disagree with you.
The genre has its moments - but I take your point. I often watch anime that are subjectively bad from my viewpoint, if only for the comparison value when watching the good shows. However, to refer to my original post... the problem with this anime is not that it is mecha silliness. There's a place for that sort of thing, and it is a well-established genre of the anime medium. I have no issues with that. The problem is that the whole damn thing is so competely unoriginal. It's one step removed from outright plagiarism. - abunai |

That's bad news. I was hoping for good things when I watched the trailer... How is the music? (I was already planning to invest in the OST when it comes out, but it would be nice to hear some feedback ahead of time.)
Sigh... I've always liked Shoji Kawamori's past work, so hopefully this one has good storytelling. (I'm a hopeful thinker.) |

Hm, this thread was actually helpful. Thanks a lot. Although I was thinking of checking this out (Despite that I didn't enjoy Sokyuu no Fafner...though the OP and ED were fantastic.), I will now stay far, far away.

Sorry to dig this old thread up from the grave, but I had some questions. Since everybody following this show now must have a few eps under their belts, is it getting any better? Aside from Abunai's first impressions, is it worth watching?
I usually love mecha anime - RahXephon, EVA and Macross Zero being some of my favorites. Would any of you recomend this show? |

the first episode had TONS of potential. It was very good. Episodes 2-3 were alright, but then it went downhill. Although we're not far into the series, the last few episodes have been complete garbage. The captain throws out some pseudo-intellectual crap and the kids have to implement it into their mecha fight. Boring. Cliche. All of it. I've noticed that it's basically just a serious parody of mecha series.
The best thing about the series is the OST. Seriously, the OP and ED are awesome, not to mention quite a few BGMs. |
