Yes, it is shoujo. Heck, it even has "Shojo" printed on the spine.
Kaori Yuuki is a shojo manga-ka, though it can be hard to tell sometimes with her manga. I would put Ceres in the same category. They are definitely shoujo, but the dark themes and all the violence and gore (and occasional nudity) may make it seem otherwise to some people. |

Is Angel Sanctuary a good series? I was thinking about getting it. Also, I've never bought a shojo and I was thinking about it (ya know, trying new thing once in a while). Could you also suggest another shojo series that is good incase this one's a stinker..

Angel Sanctuary is FANTASTIC, especially if you're into the whole 'angels and demons in bloody climatic battles' thing. The creator basically took a page out of the Go Nagai plot book.....that is, take biblical or christian mythology and completely and blasphemously TURN IT ON ITS EAR. However, if you don't like this one, I'd suggest X/1999 by CLAMP. |

Remembering of course that X/1999 is on hiatus and has been for a long time, thus chances are it will never be finished (though the anime gives a fairly decent ending). I'm sure there's something out there in shoujo that you would like, it just depends what else you are interested, and how much of the shoujo elements you can take (ie does too much romance turn you off things). |

By shoujo you mean like a gay manga right?? If so then no. It comes dam close but there wasn't any shoujo/gay relations in Angel Sanctuary, at least not with the main characters. And FYI it IS a fantastic story, I loved it and it easily became one of my favs.

You should go check up on the definition of Shoujo. Shoujo just means it is aimed at a female audience. |

I believe the term you're looking for is shounen-ai or yaoi. As has been said before, shoujo means anime targetted at a female audience (shoujo is Japanese for girl after all). |

O.o sorry, I've seen the term associated with stuff like Gravitation and other um... yaoi?? manga, so i made a mistake in thinking that you ment that, but its still has still plenty to offer for both male and female fans.

Well, it's going a bit off topic, but I highly recommend Ceres: Celestial Legend. Like Angel Sanctuary, it is very dark and violent (although probably not quite as violent as Angel Sanctuary). It is one of my favorite manga and I consider it to be Yuu Watase's masterpiece. It is a total of 14 volumes (the last volume just came out a few weeks ago), which is shorter than Angel Sanctuary's 20 (12 being the most recent).
I wrote a review of the anime here. The review is for the anime, but pretty much everything there (except the music, of course) applies to the manga. For a more Magical Girl style shoujo manga, you can try Alice 19th, also by Yuu Watase. It's fairly short at only 7 volumes. Like Ceres and AS, it is very dark though not quite as violent. I must also highly recommend Kodocha. It may be difficult to find as it is now out of print though. It is 10 volumes long and published by Tokyopop. It's about a hyper-active 6th grader named Sana. She is a star on a popular TV show called Kodocha (Child's Toy). At school, her class is a mess. The teacher can't do anything because all of the boys never listen and cause chaos. The series is a great combination of humor and drama as Sana deals with her stardom and her school life (and blossoming romance with the boys' leader, Akito). My last recommendation is Full Moon wo Sagashite. It is 7 volumes long, with 4 being the most recent and 5 coming out in a few weeks. It is about a 12-year-old Mitsuki Kurama who is dying of throat cancer. She wants to become a famous singer and refuses to undergo surgery because she would lose her voice. One day, two shinigami (Death Gods) come to her and tell her that she has one year to live and they have come to prevent her from meeting the person who will prevent her death. I really can't recommend this series enough. Go give it a try. |

I recommend BASARA. It's the best shoujo manga ever, as far as I'm concerned. Watase Yuu's manga can't come close to BASARA's characterization (even the most minor characters have their own depths) and plot twists. It also doesn't have Angel Sanctuary's tendency to become complicated for complication's sake. The issues BASARA tackles (overthrowing the king and creating a better country; what exactly is a better country?) aren't what you find in most shoujo manga. All the characters have to make hard decisions and live with the consequences. BASARA is a really deep, moving manga that will make you think and cry with every volume. BASARA has bittersweet romance, but it also has the grittiness (and sometimes graphic, yet never gratuitous violence) that will appeal to guys, too. |

Angel Sanctuary is shoujo because it is aimed at a female audience. The art might not look too shoujo, but Kaori Yuki's style is still shoujo. Just a bit darker. Well, it's got the pretty guys in there, so I guess thats one way to tell.
[OT] Viz also has X/1999 under shoujo, and not that I've read it, but it doesn't seem very shoujo to me. Could someone explain? |

All CLAMP is essentially shoujo. X/1999 has a considerable amount of action/fighting in it, but the focus is always kept on the characters and their development/relationships with others, which from my experience is the hallmark of shoujo anime and manga. |
