seriously! i cant find anything anime/manga related here!

i've searched everywhere, and the only place that DID do mainly anime and manga was replaced with a comic book store (no manga here! just batman and robin!).

and the only anime i found was the first four episodes of trigun, and that did'nt last very long...

and all the others i find aren't any good and most likely in the "3 for £2.50!" sections. plus i hate having to download everything (small variety) and anything like anime or manga expos/conventions are really poor and dont sell anything.

...i hate living in england... Crying or Very sad

Forbidden Planet on New Tottenham Court Road maybe?

The Piccadilly Circus-area Tower Records, Virgin Megastore, and HMV (next to the Trocadero) also had some (including a few import CDs even).

And, if you get a chance to go to Piccadilly Circus anyway, you might as well pop into Japan Centre on Piccadilly just across the street from the Tower Records for imported videos, CDs, and merchandise. I got a whole set of Kodansha Ah My Goddess! pins there and a Cardcaptor Sakura beachtowel!

Not that London = all of England, I know.

Tenchi is right. "Forbidden Planet" does have a nice selection, including some figures and models.

For me, I get my anime from online stores *shrug*. I don't know about you but I've a credit card, but the pound sterling is the strongest currency so we should be getting anime cheaper relative to other countries (*cough* not including the customs fees that is *cough*).

Any branch of Forbidden Planet or Travelling Man throughout the UK should sell plenty of manga and anime, I've been getting the vast majority of my manga there for around 6 years and they've only not carried something once or twice, and that's mostly because their copy sold before I got to it. When that happens, you ask and they can order it in. You can even set up an order whereby they'll hold the newest volume of a series for you as and when they're made available, so you don't even have to worry about someone else buying it first. I'd love to see the London branch's selection though...

Virgin, Silverscreen and HMV chains also stock anime, though a smaller selection than FP or TM. They can also order anything they don't have in stock in for you. Waterstones and Blackwells have started carrying a small but rapidly growing range of manga, again, they'd be able to order something in for you. Borders sells manga and anime, again, what they don't have, they also can probably get.

Or, if you live nowhere near a city, as has already been mentioned, you can order anything you're looking for from amazon by searching on title or author. Plus they're cheaper than retail and have free shipping on orders over a certain amount. I wouldn't recommend eBay for anime though, it's 90% bootlegs. I've bought some manga from eBay (and sold even more...) and it's good for the odd bargain, though usual eBay common sense applies. There are some UK based sites knocking around that sell manga and anime, but I'm yet to come across one that offers any real value or a better selection than what I've been able to get elsewhere.

Honestly, I've never had any problems finding anime or manga in this country...

I live in the miserable little city of Leicester, which is hardly the shopping capital of the world, and yet there are tons of places I can buy anime and manga.

The main Virgin and HMV stores have pretty large collections of anime DVDs, with a significant proportion of the releases available in Europe - tons of Ghibli, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and so on. Often they include anime DVDs in their sales so you don't end up paying the ridiculous £19.99 RRP for a single DVD, too.

As for manga, there's a large selection in Forbidden Planet and Magic Labyrinth (comic shops) and quite a few titles in Borders and Waterstones.

Online, amazon.co.uk and play.com have huge quantities of anime DVDs. Amazon also stock just about every manga volume available in the US, even if sometimes they're a little slow to deliver them. Order a batch together so you get free postage and it works out at about £4.50 a volume, which isn't bad at all.

Further afield, if you're online and have a credit card there's no reason not to buy your R1 anime DVDs direct from the US. Keep the orders under £17.99 and you won't even pay any customs fees.

I get most of my anime from amazon.com but I do keep a look out for sale items at HMV. Be careful about the customs limit though, they work out the value by taking the declared US Dollar price on the customs label and using their own exchange rate so it's best to allow a safety margin.

For manga, I usually find Borders much better than Waterstones, and Ottakars bookshops are expanding their manga sections. Ottakars even have a 'buy 3 get 1 free' promotion going at the moment, plus selected stores are having "Tokyopop evenings" over the coming months.

Oh my god dude I know your pain, and not so long ago I was in the same situation as you. But there is a solution my friend. Basically all I do now I just buy anime, without downloads or anything. The best place to buy anime for me is play.com. It has free postage and packaging and the prices are fantastic. It has its own anime section with almost all anime tittles in it.

Hmv and virgin stores if you have one near you. They are always good for anime dvd's, and the prices aren’t half bad either.

As for the magna sorry I cant really help you out there. There was this comic shop I checked out in the town I live in, and it was totally useless. As you said all they had was batman and robin.

So yes in some ways England sucks for anime and other interests, but if you search in the right places you should come up with something.

Hope this helps Smile

I made a thread in Retail here, and it is primaraly about reccomendations for online ordering. I don't know if you are considering that an option, but I'm sure some of the places are not so bad on the shipping...

I think people get too critical of eBay and bootlegs. I've seen what bootlegs look like from perusing the collections of others but I've never ended up with a bootlegged anime product myself. All you have to do is watch for the obvious signs and you're usually in the clear. Too many episodes per disc? No mention in the description of the item NOT being a bootleg? Price far too low for a new product? It takes a few seconds for me to figure out who's selling bootlegs and who's not. Is it really that difficult for everyone else? Regular posters to forums like this one should be able to pick out a bootlegged product with their eyes blindfolded and their mouse tied around their hands. So what explains all the warnings and hesitation?

Personally, I have bought maybe a hundred items on eBay and never lived to regret it, not even once.

I'm not sure how this works in Europe, but here in the US parents can give their younger children special allowance cards that are either prepaid or tied to the parent's checking account and can be used almost anywhere. Also, Americans who are old enough to have a checking account can pay many major US websites with other forms of electronic payments such as...

1. Debit cards
2. e-checks
3. ACH transfers

All of these only require a free checking account at any major bank. Certainly you can find something similar where you live?

If not, you might consider just handing a family member or trusted friend some cash and have them order a pre-paid gift card for the website you plan on buying from? I remember my classmates having checking accounts and credit cards in middle school, but maybe things just work differently over here.

I hadn't meant that in the sense that it's easy to get duped into buying bootlegs, when you know a few of the key traits, spotting them is very straighforward, I just meant that the vast majority of listings for anime DVDs on eBay.co.uk are bootlegs. Of course you can get legit dvds there (and some real bargains if you're lucky) I've bought and sold a reasonable number myself, but for browsing purposes or shoppers who are unfamiliar with what is and isn't domestically available, I wouldn't say it was the best option for legit releases, that's all I meant by that.

Where do you live mate, in a cave? Have you got an Ottakar's Book shop? Plenty of manga there and they have a manga club where if you buy 3 manga you get the forth free every time. Also there are plenty of UK on-line sites that sell both anime and manga in either R2, or R1, like here and here just for starters. ADV-films.co.uk has started their own on-line shop as well, also there's Amazon.co.uk which sells everything their .com site sells So it's not as bad as you think.
