I started along this line in another topic but didn't think it fit there, so...
Do you ever forget about the voice actors? I mean, do you see just the character and totally block out the voice actor behind that character? If its really good voice acting, it makes the character seem real, which makes the actor just a shadow. The fact that you don't notice there is an actor behind the voice should be a tribute to the actor's skill, right?
I, for one, don't really notice the voice actors in anime productions. It may have something to do with the fact that I totally get into the story and don't think about the production part of it. It's because of this I can never recognize when an actor has done a good job, only when they do a bad one.
Can anyone else relate to this?
Better yet, can anyone NOT relate?

I can relate, though I always listen to subs when I can help it. Not being able to speak Japanese, it's hard to tell whether the voice actor is good or not, as some people in another topic mentioned.
Good point, though. I get involved too, though I recently began thinking about the production part of it when rewatching a few things. Your mind definitely drifts to that when listening to a bad voice actor, so you're quite right.

When I got to watching around my 50th or so anime title, I started to notice several repeating voices. One happened to be Kawasumi Ayako, who did major roles for a lot of known anime. When I got to around my 100th, I couldn't not notice, since I heard the same voices over and over. The unique voices, such as Kawasumi Ayako's, are especially easy to recognize no matter what kind of character the seiyuu is acting.
And it really doesn't matter how much I get into the anime. In fact, I used to chose which anime to watch next based on seiyuus so you can say that I can't relate at all.
Being skilled as a voice actor doesn't mean you forget about them. Being skilled means you're convinced of the character being realistic through the actor's manner of speech. Because there's always a time when the voice just doesn't fit a character, and that'd be the staff to blame, not the seiyuu.

I tend not to care though with the trend of hearing soo many production values of some shows I do notice some specific voice acting. Though not the often but I will notice it time to time.

Depends. Normally, I can. But if it's a VA I've heard quite a few times before or just really like, it's kinda hard to seperate the actor from the character. This goes for both English and Japanese tracks. Some are very good actors, but when you're so familiar with a voice... "Oh, it's Crispin Freeman again."
Honestly, it's worse with American cartoons with me. Jim Cummings is the worst. His voice is very distinctive and he's been in pretty much everything. X3

There are some voice actors I completely forget they are there. My prime example would be just about all the characters from fruits basket. I love the anime and found myself totally amerced in their world. The thought of voice actors was completely oblivious to me. Other anime has certain characters that can make the entire anime seem a little less real. Escaflowne for me in the English dub was a little odd. Hitomi's voice actress was so annoying and unbearable that it got me thinking to much about the other characters voice actors and took some of the magic away from say the Japanese OAV.
Hope this helps

The english voice actor for lucy/Nyu in Eflen Lied was noticable and
WAS HORRIBLE. IMO she sounded like a man or a guy.
It totally ruined my impression of her.

The VA for Edward Elric in FMA has a VERY distinct voice. I noticed straight away that Hitsugaya Toushiro from Bleach was of the same VA (Romi PAKU). Of course, people also need the 'ear' for this, just as one needs the 'ear' for music. But having said that, I think almost everyone would have realized by now that Captain Hitsugaya sounds peculiarly familiar. Uh, I didn't need a spoiler tag for that, did I?
Anyway, I don't think it's fair to say that the VA isn't doing a good job just because his/her voice is an easily noticeable one. I think Romi PAKU did excellent voice acting in both FMA and Bleach. Yes, the voice was easily recognized; however, the 'acting' made all the difference.
In FMA, Edward Elric is an emotionally volatile character. The VA convincingly projects Ed's anger, insecurities, despair, and innate benevolence. By a huge contrast, Hitsugaya Toushiro from Bleach is a bad-ass tough guy who knows when to be impassive and say "I will kill you." Of course, such contrast owes to the different characterizations (duh!), but it is, IMO, chiefly the VA's ability to execute through different behavior that establishes such distinct characters.
I agree with Azathrael. No, I don't think the VA should be completely forgotten about, nor do I think that not being able to recognize VAs is a sign of good voice acting. I think a voice is allowed to be recognized, as long as the voice acting is not a bland repetition of a previous character.

I tend not to notice the voice actors, beyond the qualiy of their performance in that role, and in many cases I couldn't tell you who had which role, or recognize that two different roles were the same actor.
On the other hand, there are of course some actors that tend to usually sound +-5% off the exact same voice, such as Steven Blum, or Cree Summer, so that every time they're on screen it's hard to separate the character from the actor. This isn't always a bad thing, after all Will Smith has made quite the career on playing Will Smith, because people like Will Smith, but it is noticable.
Sometimes I also find myself "attuned" to certain VAs, so that I can start to pick them out of a crowd. Like Billy West, for example. For a while I wasn't aware of how much work he did, but once I learned that he was the Cheerio's bee, as well as Fry, Farnsworth, and zoidberg, I started to be able to pick him out when he did other voices in other projects, even when they didn't sound much like his previous voices.

I don't know much about Japanese VAs, but Steve Blum and Vic Mignogna are perfect in just about everything. Personally, I beleive that Vic portrayed Edward Elric much better than Romi Paku did. He actually sounded like a GUY and he performed the emotional moments perfectly.

I don't know what kind of impression you were hoping to get, because Kira Vincent Davis' portrayal of Lucy/Nyu sounded about as feminine as you can get. She sounded nothing like a man.
And, FYI, a man and a guy are the same thing.

Hmmm...yeah. It seems only a problem when the same actor is used over and over again, so you can recognize it instantly. Once you do that, you start judging the performance and don't get into the story all that much. That's definitely the casting director's screwup, not the actors'. I can definitely see the thing with Will Smith. Maybe one of my problems is I'm not appreciative enough of voice actors (when I thought I was). Or I just like a good story .
I haven't watched FMA in subs yet, so I can't compare with the dub, but IMO Vic was totally perfect for Ed. Its true, he did nail the emotions right on the money.

Vic did do a good job. i always here complaints about dubs not being as good as the originals, but in FMA the only voices i like better in japanese were Envy's and Armstrongs. but for the most part, the american cast is much better. As for hearing the same voices...I can pick out most common voice actors. Most notably being Scott McNiel since the man is in absolutely everything, not just anime, but cartoons like Lucha Lucha and even being in Scooby Doo 2(the live action one). That man has a hand in almost every animated show i watch. its crazy. He does an excelent job with all his voices, so i dont blame him for getting so much work. He even shows up in FMA as Hoenheim of Light. But my fav. work of his was probably Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing.

There have been a few times when I've watched a series and felt vaguely disappointed. Then some really great actor comes along to voice some minor side character and I suddenly realize just how mediocre the normal cast is. I guess that still sort of validates what you're saying since with an all-around good cast I rarely react to good voice acting in such a conscious manner.

I kind of had that same experience with Princess Mononoke.
(I might as well just copy some of my post on that topic, which was where I got this topic from)
Using Billy Bob Thornton (Jigo), Minnie Driver (Eboshi), Jada Pinkett-Smith (Toki) really made their characters seem unique, unlike any other characters in anime.
Although it made those actors noticeable, they were really something. No complaints of bad voice acting there. Why would someone (mainly talking about myself here) notice these actors and not others who did a really good job on other anime productions?

Ya, I hear the same VA's in lots of different animes and get to thinking " Hey... isn't that _________'s voice"?
I can pick out and notice about anyone, or atleast remember what other titles that voice sounds like it came from.
