I have toyed with the idea of jumping on the old cosplay wagon. I haven't ever dressed up at a con but have started to feel the itch to give it a shot.
Now I can't sew at all so making my own costume would be a nightmare. Plus I have a toddler so you can imagine how much free time I have! So far all I have found while surfing the net, is costumes on ebay. I did find one auction that was from China that caught my eye. It was for a school uniform from Negima. The shipping seemed a bit high but overall the price didn't seem too outrageous. (So ebay might be my best bet) I was wondering has anyone had a costume custom made from ebay auctions? I'm a little worried about going that route as I don't want to get stuck with a crappy costume or the sizing be off and then I am stuck. I found websites showing you how to make costumes but again I'm "Challenged" in that area and I'd prefer to let the labor go to someone else. 
Are there any websites outside of ebay for cosplay anime costumes? I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Who knows I might even feel adventurious enough to try out cosplay at Anime Fest in Dallas! Thanks! |

The problem with buying costumes off eBay is that you're taking a risk with quality. Sometimes you'll be able to get a well-made costume that fits surprisingly well, but more often than not, the quality will be a little sup-par. Not to mention it'll be harder to make the costume fit you perfectly, unless you tailor it afterwards.
One of the best places to browse around for costume-buying/commissioning tips is cosplay.com. A look through their forums will reveal a lot about where people get stuff, who's selling what, and which commissioners are more reputable than others. Conversely, you could type a few search strings into Google like "cosplay commission" "costume commission" etc, but likewise with eBay, it's hard to guarantee quality. If you're willing to drop the money, you can always buy professionally made cosplay costumes from Japan. Sites like http://www.cospa.com/index.html and http://www.cosmates.jp/ sell high-quality costumes, but they're very expensive. |

Ya I agree with SakechanBD when you look at some of the costume it does appear that they are less then stellar in quality. That not to say there isn't some good seller on Ebay it will probably be very difficult to find it the problem. Also I suggest that you do check out cosplay.com, there is a lot of information one might learn from that site. But your best bet in actually trying to make your costume yourself, or maybe your mom. Or whoever knows how to use a needle and thread. Till next time, Delta Kiral |

After doing some searching on google I found some places I think I can piece together something.
I appreciate the suggestions! Delta Kiral, My mom can't sew either LOL! Let's just say as a kid I always had store bought Halloween costumes! Sadly the same will be with my daughter. Although they have cute costumes for kids these days anyway! If I could sew I might try making a costume from Tenchi and dressing my lil one up as a cabbit! There's also a couple of girls from the office who cosplay and make their own costumes. I might try to find the materials and see if they will do it for me as a commission

(My mother couldn't sew either...so I've never learned.) Perhaps if you can commission one of them, you can have someone watch the toddler one day when they're working on your costume, and just do some observing. I wouldn't say ask for full-blown teaching, but perhaps just seeing how they work might give you a little confidence to try out a little sewing on your own. I'm currently waiting until I know I'll dedicate myself to learning before I spend the money on a machine and try to find a few lessons and/or easy patterns. Which given I'm about to restart grad school, it'll probably be a few years. But good luck! While I don't have a toddler, I do understand the boat you're in. I'd love to cosplay, but not only can I not sew, but I haven't a strand of creativity in me. ^^; |
