I just rented and watched three disks of NeoRanga. I liked it but I couldn't help but think it could have been outstanding "talked about" anime, much like Cowboy Beebop, Escaflone, Lain, Nadesico etc.
I'm curious, what do you think seperates the greats from the also ran. I'm not talking about the stuff that is copies of everything else (that's easy) but the stuff that tries to be somewhat original like Neo Ranga, Gasaraki, Vandred, etc?

Hmm, also rans? This is pretty interesting.

Well, I'd have to say that exposure is one thing that helps a lot. I mean, let's be honest. Even if Cowboy Bebop had been an utter pile of an anime, it would've received a ton of exposure because it was a high dollar series by a top studio with star seiyuu's and staff. A good example of this sort of situation is Brain Powerd. Yoshiyuki Tomino, the guy behind Gundam, hyped it to every extent using his name to bring in viewers. Of course, when the series was found to be unpolished and unintelligible it lost all of those viewers. Of course, it isn't just Japanese exposure, the marketing that stateside distributors do is also critical. Heatguy J had the hugest, most obtrusive ad this site has seen (at least since I've been coming here) and as such, was on the tips of people's tongues.

The other "also ran" symptom tends to be unremarkable or all-too distinctive character designs. Gun Frontier, Reign the Conqueror, Kikaider, and Argentosoma are all good examples of series whose artwork detracted (or distracted) from the excellent story underneath. It's disappointing sometimes that visually dull series like Onegai Teacher become more popular than distinctive series like Video Girl Ai, but it's almost an eventuality.

Finally, some stories are simply too new, unique, or outlandish for the general populace. Angel Sanctuary would be a good example. It's artwork is gorgeous and its writing is sublime, but when the story revolves around theology, death, human nature, and incestual themes people get a bit distraught.

Any one of these things could take a good series and make it merely "okay", but I'm sure there's something I've missed. Quite a shame, too.
