I just saw Akira over the summer and I thought it was a great movie. But the only problem is that I don't understand the ending. Does anyone understand the ending of Akira? I would appreciated it if someone explained it to me. thanks in advance.

I've seen Akira, actually, I saw it over the summer, too. Great masterpiece, but it's one of those anime that you sometimes have to see more than once to fully grasp. I suggest you watch it again
 It's better than getting someone else's perspective.

serously though, it's an amazing movie, never get sick of watching it (about 2 dozen times total in the past 5yrs... friends / family never watched it and need me to explain  )
It's one of those 'somebody new to anime asks for recommendations' type of movies, first one I'd show newbs, follwed up by Evangelion |

animegmr. It's one of those "sittin on the fence" titles.
If it's really great or not depends on who you ask. You'll get people who love it to the nth degree and people who despise it and say its a pox on the industry. It falls in between really. Before the more recent redubbing, it was hard to find it in anything but english (in my experience) and the old english dub was just horrible, and confusing. This new dub, while I don't like some of the voices, explains things more thoroughly. The animation is simply beautiful, especially for its time, and it has a very...epic feel to it. But I would deffinately follow an earlier suggestion and read the manga, which shows you the much grander scale that this story was suppose to take place on. I ramble, I ramble. Sorry. Syker Seven |

So very true, I watched the movie about a dozen times before reading the manga (about 2000 pages total), it makes much more sense, and really explains alot more.. the movie more or less ends in the 3rd volume (3 of 6). check both out, makes it all that much more enjoyable |

Akira was the first anime I ever saw, on late night British TV in it's original japanese format.
It was about another two years before I ever saw any more anime, Akira has such a titanic presence that I though it was a one-off film at the time. |

oHhH me too i saw akira on my satellite channel and i originally wasnt gonna watch it but then once i started i couldnt walk away but my sister recorded over it
 anyway its really cool i didn't really get the ending either tho but yeah before that princess mononoke was the wierdest movie i ever saw (i was even more shocked when i found out it was by disney! lol) but after seeing akira i would say thats the wierdest movie lol

No joke, I actually just watched it. I stopper about halfway through to check up on the boards and that's when I noticed this topic. It's currently paused at the part where the so-called "cable installers" are in the sewers just before they encounter those flying drones.
In any case, Akira is one of my favorite anime movies and it's style of animation was literally jaw dropping for it's day and still is pretty good today even. It's also a great movie and I highly reccomend it to anyone who has yet to see it. |

Well it's nice to know that the younger generation of fans still has an interest in quality animation. For a second I thought that all we'd see for the next decade would be CCS or DBZ knock-offs. Anyway, to feed your interest, Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator/ artist and everything else behind Akira as a whole, also directed Roujin Z(available from CPM), did the character designs for Harmageddon, worked on one of the segments for the upcoming Memories dvd from Sony and the upcoming Mani Mani(aka Neo Tokyo) dvd from ADV, produced Metropolis, and is finally getting his long-awaited Steamboy project off the ground. And since I'm a whore for him and his entourage, I'll recommend Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue(from CPM), which he consulted Kon on, and the upcoming dvd of Millennium Actress. P.S. Cindy Yamauchi of http://www.supertechnoarts.com/ also contributed to Akira and her company sells the first episode of a cool oav we all know as Jojo's Bizarre Adventures. On a manga note, I recommend you check out Domu and Legend of Mother Sarah as well. (Although Toren claims the author went on to other things.)

i know they actually had the lips move and stuff (which makes harder to dub over lol) instead of the big blob flapping around that they use now in anime lol plus in the (restored) dub kaneda's voice is done by vash's voice actor
