I'm not sure if this has been asked before...but I looked back for 10 pages and didn't see anything, so I thought I'd ask the following:

We all know that there are several reasons for not liking dubs, but what company, in your opinion, does the best job of making good dubs and why (ie, they make the series approchable for a US audience, the dubs are true to the Japanese dialogue, the VAs are always great, ect.)?

From what anime I've seen in dubs, and IMHO, Anime Works does the best job with their dubs. Samurai Deeper Kyo, for instance, is *very* well done. The translators leave in Japanese phrases where prudent, but events are explained well in the dub, and characterisation is good. The VAs are usually great, as well. Finallt, Anime Works tends to put more than 3 epis on a DVD, unlike other companies.

Second, I suppose would have to be Viz...especially Ocean Group, which dubs Inu Yasha. We all know that there are a lot of complaints to be had about Inu-chan's show (like the fact that Kayede saying "ye" constantly when almost no one else in the show ever has...), but Viz does seem to be responsive to complaints from Fandom (ie, the name-change for "Spike" and "Patch" back to their Japanese names). At least Viz learns...and they hire decent VAs, too.

Have differing opinions? Have something to add? Please, by all means, respond... Very Happy

The problem is, like with most, Anime Works doesn't do the dubbing, they hire a studio to do it for them and for that reason, you will have some variance to the work done...

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3630&start=15

has some comments that I made and the ongoing discussion

without repeating myself too much, I consider Animaze to have the best and most consistent work at the moment. I consider Bang Zoom to be hit and miss, with a few more misses than hits lately.

As Godai said, many licensors don't do the dubs, they hire outside studios to do them. But ADV Films does it's own dubbing in its own in-house studios.

For starters, TRSI makes great dubs. They go with different studios, but they always go with someone who is top-quality.

Animaze and New Generation are considered by many to be two of the best studios around. Costal Carolina was also highly respected, but they went out of business.

Animaze does a lot of work for Bandai and Pioneer (err, Geneon as of this coming Wednesday). They've produced several of my favorite dubs, including the two that made me change my mind about dubs, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun (before these two dubs I was a staunch believer that dubs could never be as good as the original, now I know that they can... they just often aren't).

New Generation does most their work for Pioneer. They did the excellent Haibane Renmei dub that was reviewed in this month's Dub Track.

Coastal Carolina did most of its work for AnimEigo.

You know, I loved the Cowboy Bebop dub as much as the original, but didn't care for the Trigun dub that much. It's not to say that it was a bad dub, but it was fighting against what I consider to be a better ensemble cast for the orginal.

Oddly enough, I really, really liked the dub for Hand Maid May (also done by Animaze) enough to say I like the dub better than the original cast in this case (very rare for me to say that) and I enjoyed the creativity done by New Generation on the I My Me Strawberry Eggs dub. (much in part was thanks to Crispin Freeman which IIRC also directed that one as well)

As far as Right Stuf goes? I think the studios they typically hire out of is in New York, IIRC.

And although they do put a great deal of effort into their work, and maybe I'm too critical, I haven't really enjoyed what they've done that much. (I felt Arima was miscast for His and Her circumstances and I made my argument here: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=31533&highlight=#31533 although I never got a response.) I like to think I'm the kind of guy who stand up and give intelligent reasons behind my arguments. I may not always have people agree with me on things, but I'll be damned if I'm going to give piss poor reasons why I feel the way I do.

New Generation Pictures, no doubt about it. Hellsing, Haibane Renmei, and a few others are all fantastic and better than the Japanese track. I think ADV is improving slowly (RahXephon is a great dub), but they have a bit of a ways to go before they're on par with New Gen in my eyes.

Well, English is the common language of Planet Gunsmoke so nothing else would really work for me. Not that I only listen to a japanese track on titles based in Japan, but we hear that said so rarely that it makes a big impact with me.

I really like the ADV dubs myself. Script changes aside I like the cast they use with their shows, lots of variety. Also the biggest reason is because I think Brett Weaver is an amazing VA, even though he only does one voice, it's seems to be quite the multipurpose voice.

I guess my favorite as far as actually having dubs done is Anime Works. Kenshin and Magic Users Club are two of my favorite dubs with Kyo having instantly grabed me. Plus they put together some of the best DVDs (gotta love Outake reels!)

As much as ADV has been pumping out lately, I'd have to say they are the best.

Najica, Rahxephon, FMP, Super Gals!, Noir and Kurumi 2 all rock I-M-O.

One question though. Do Animaze, Bang Zoom, and New Gen even count as 3 different companies? I mean they all have just about the same roster 90% of the time. Wendee Lee, David Lucas, Sandy Fox, Crispin Freeman, Ron Allen, etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong though. All those VA's rock in my book.

Well, they all are pretty much based out of Los Angeles, so I know what you mean about that. The thing is that the directors (for the most part) are retained by the studios themselves, so that can make a big difference in the quality of the dub. It's hard to place as much blame on the actors themselves when you realize that even if the the VA read the line in a way that you thought was perfect, if the director doesn't like what he's hearing, it goes out the door. Sometimes I get the feeling that some of the directors don't care that much about the jobs being done.

Indeed, most good dubs I have seen have some association with Wendee Lee, which is a testament to her amount of work. As to the person who said Ocean was good, I must disagree, as they are the worst of the studios. I also have ethical issues with their practices.

FLCL is my favorite dub yet. Ocean Group has some talented actors but generally does slipshod work. I liked their dub for Jin-Roh, though.

most times I like the dub nearly as much or more than the subbed version. I don't know to much about the dubbing companies because unlike most people I don't have issues with dubbing, I am just happy to get anime how ever I can get it. DVD's contain both so I am happy I can watch determined by my mood. Now there a many series in which I hate the dub work.... Love Hina, well thats my primary example. I hate the dub. BUt when you look at the more recent releases the dub tracks are much better than they have been in the past.

Honestly, I'm not sure which studio Animeigo called on to produce the Oh My Goddess dub, but it still stands in my mind as one of the very best. Juliet Cesario as Belldandy is quite possibly one of the best casting calls ever made in anime.

Tempest referred to them earlier... that was the late, great Costal Carolina studio...

May it R.I.P.
