I'm going to answer this question assuming you are living in the U.S.

It will probably be tough to find a good Shonen (aimed at boys)action series that is less than 10 volumes. The FullMetal Alchemist manga is around 15 or so volumes and counting, and Naruto is well over 30 and counting. At the moment, I can't think of any good shonen titles that are under 10 volumes.

You'll probably have better luck with drama if you don't mind reading shojo (aimed at girls) manga. Full Moon is really good and its only 7 volumes and all of them are availble. While shojo manga usually don't run as long as shonen manga, they frequently exceed 10 volumes.

For now, FMA and Hellsing are a nice way to start. They're not painfully long, and they have plenty of action and are both great works of art.

Do avoid long series like Naruto and Rurouni Kenshin if you're just starting - it's not worth it that way.

Chrono Crusade: Since you mentioned Fullmetal and AIR in the same breath and wanted something short, I'd recommend this manga; It has the shounen action type elements of FMA and well-done meleodrama a la tragic heroine of AIR. And this won't hurt your wallet either, clocking in at 8 volumes. Oh yeah, the manga differs greatly from the anime (in case you've seen the anime, same goes for FMA).

"pockets"? I assume you mean volumes.

There are currently 7 volumes available in the U.S. with an 8th out in Japan. It is an ongoing series, but it is expected to end at about volume 10. If you start this series, be warned that you'll be waiting a while (over a year) for each new volume.

I forgot about Chrono Crusade but its a good series, and I recommend checking it out.

Ah, so you are from Sweden. Such information is useful when asking for recommendations. Since there are only 8 volumes out in Japan, volume 8 probably just isn't available in Sweden yet either.

Ah, Chrono Crusade. I've got the first five volumes right now, and so far, it's a really good read. Smile And I don't mind the fact that the manga differs so greatly from the anime; after all, I hear it's normal for some manga to do that.

In that case, he'd have to go for some scanlations. And if there isn't a manga scanlation crew that offers scans in Swedish, he can always start his own. Then again, if he can understand English, then he could always just import the American releases when they come out.
