Hi everybody...
I'm kinda a rookie to anime and I'm looking for the real hard stuff!!

Welcome to the board!
But just some advice: some of us folks here look on this board while we are at work, so it would be nice if you cut out the curses, if you have to still use them, use sh$# or s&%t.

Anyway, check out Blue Gender, all the fun and gore of Starship Troopers.

If you can get it, I think you'd really enjoy Berserk. It has all the "hard stuff" you seem to want coupled with a good story and excellent characters, all of which are handeled very intelligently by the writing.

Akira is tame in comparison to a few things that could be listed... but here's some stuff you may like:

Fist of the North Star
Berserk (which was already listed of course)
Hellsing (different, but very bloody)
Ninja Scroll

Well, its a bit too early in the morning for me I guess. I may come back and name a few more if my brain starts clicking.

don't forget Texhnolyze... a wonderfully twisted and psychological show with a fair amount of violence also.

Another good anime that fits your descritption is Perfect Blue which is a film that likes to mess with your mind. It also meets your requirement for violence, very intense stuff... though its not action oriented.

Hello Kitty.

But in all seriousness, for violent anime, most of the particularly good titles have been mentioned. But there are a few that strike me as also being good.

The Battle Angel Alita anime is actually pretty good (if you can find it anywhere these days). Then there's Kite. Kite is uncommonly violent. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade has some pretty wrenching moments. Not particularly gory, but everything is posed in a realistic manner so it hits a bit harder. For kicks, you might even want to look into Crying Freeman, which has all of the overly macho sex and gore one could want from an 80's anime. Finally, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, which was directed by the same person who directed Ninja Scroll, is a very stylish and beautiful piece with plenty of action to pique your interest.

And while it isn't exactly violent, you said you were also after psychological trauma. In which case, look into Perfect Blue. It's certainly worth your time.

I've heard that uncut Violence Jack is just as brutal as it gets in anime.

Rurouni Kenshin is fairly bloody, especially the prequel/sequels. And it has a great story to it. Of course, like many of us say, "Berserk!!! Buy and watch! Buy and watch!"

Narutaru

Some of the sickest sh!t I have ever seen committed to film.

That includes several David Lynch movies.

Probably the closest you can get to being like Akira is Spriggan. It reminds me a lot of Akira.Well coreographed action, great animation, and an okay plot.If you want psocological, though,go with Lain or Boogiepop Phantom.

BlackJack.
He is the man. And he is also the alter ego of the Man.
