When I heard they were playing the new DBZ movie at my local multiplex, I decided to immediately order a ticket as it would be the first time I got to see a DBZ film in theaters and I think only the second time I got to see an anime film in theaters at all (I saw The Wind Rises when it was out a few months back, and as far as I can remember it was my first). Well, I got back from the theater a couple of hours ago, and I enjoyed it. It was pretty good. Lots of laughs and some solid fights. The art and animation was definitely much improved from last time there was any DBZ anime produced (1996-ish?). While it wasn't much better than a decent-quality TV anime in terms of production values (and the film print wasn't very high-def), it was still good and in keeping with the classic DBZ style, just spiffier-looking, about what you'd expect from a DBZ film produced in the present day. The only bad part of the experience was that the AC in the theater room was apparently broken, because damn if it wasn't hot and stuffy in there.

It was pretty packed in the theater, and the audience enjoyed it as well. Lot's of nostalgia-ing. It got a standing ovation (well, maybe not standing, but everyone gave it a huge round of applause). Good to see that DBZ is still popular after all these years. I saw some kids in there that probably weren't even born when I first started watching on Toonami back in the 90s, but most of the audience were 20- & 30-somethings. I can't believe it's already been almost 15 years since the premiere of the so-called "Season 3" that finished off the Namek/Freeza arc. I was in my senior year in high school and I and all my buddies who were in to anime were really hyped to finally see new episodes. We all tuned into Toonami on September 13, 1999. Of course, the new voice cast wasn't very warmly received, though fewer edits was a welcome change. Of course, in the past 15 years Funimation's in-house voice actors have gotten a lot better, and the Battle of Gods dub was fairly decent.

Anywho, if you're a DBZ fan and Battle of Gods is playing in your area, go check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I saw it when it was out in Japan, and my theatergoing experience was similar, although the audience probably skewed younger (I felt old in there). A few aisles in front of me, a very small child shouted "It's Goku!" in Japanese when Goku first appeared. His mother shushed him quickly, but I thought it was cute. I also wondered how a kid that young knew enough about Goku to get excited, then remembered that DBZ Kai hadn't started all that long ago.

It was a nice nostalgia trip. I enjoyed it for the comedy more than the fight (wasn't wild about the whole SSG stuff, though how they found spoiler[the last Saiyan they needed to pull it off did bring a smile to my face. Congrats, Gohan and Videl!)]

Doesn't start 'til the 14th here. It is tempting to see it on the big screen, but I don't know if I'll go or not yet. I have already seen it through other means, back when it wasn't licensed, though it was a better than average film for a DBZ movie so I would see it again.

I haven't seen it playing at any theaters near me. Usually if a theater around here shows an anime it's at some crappy arthouse place. I was surprised to see a trailer for it when I went to see Edge of Tomorrow though.

Edit- actually it was playing at a theater in a town near me, but it was on a work day so I missed it. I'd rather watch it subbed on blu-ray anyways.

Saw the movie today. I haven't watched any DBZ in ages, so it was fun revisiting it. My theater was also packed, which I expected, but thankfully I was able to get a good seat. Couldn't hear some parts, though, because everyone's laughter drowned it out...

I think it is noteworthy how the film bucks the usual DBZ movie formula. There's only one foe, and he's hardly a villain. He doesn't have a bunch of random henchmen just so the other characters have some one to fight, and Piccolo didn't make his entrance by saving Gohan. Of course the biggest thing was spoiler[Goku actually losing].

If they decide to continue the series with more movies, I'll certainly go see them.
