I'm nervous about this one. I like the source material, it's so irreverent and plays around with fantasy cliches wonderfully, but I'm worried about Studio Deen's involvement. Log Horizon 2 was bad, even by their standards, and I'm worried that this one will turn people off purely through animation.
Other than that, I'm still quite psyched that this one is even getting an anime and will check it out for sure. Hopefully they don't dwell on some of the weirder fanservice that was in the novel and instead stick with the cynical fantasy related comedy that really drives the source material. |

So at this point, has trapped-in-a-game officially become a genre? (This one is admirably upfront about it though.)

It's more of a case of being trapped in a fantasy world that operates like a game is becoming the genre, but yeah. I'ts pretty much that! |

As long as they use TV tropes as a common sense guide I am fine with this. |

kind of, i reckon that the success of Sword Art Online took people by surprise and now loads of others are trying to cash in on it although this one changes it a little bit by not being a game per-say but by him being reincarnated in a new world that just happens to run on RPG logic so it might be enough to stand out from the crowd |

It's sounds more like log horizon and that show about some otaku who get recruit by the army to help contact a fantasy world (no not gate, the other one) had a baby.
Just reading the description I don't really see how it's going to differentiate itself from any other fantasy harem, that's assuming they even try to. |

Hey, in my book it beats the "I'm a regular high-schooler that suddenly gains some epic power (magical, political, gains a mecha, etc)" premise any day of the week |

Man, I want to like this (and I _did_ like LH, though Season 2 definitely had its share of problems) but it's hard to find anything even remotely original or out-of-the-ordinary in this spotlight. Can anyone familiar with the source material offer anything that would differentiate this from Every Other Wish-Fulfillment Fantasy Series?

I think that manga set in massive online games is a genre since around 2002-2003 or so with .hack//sign and stuff. Massive online games are extremely popular in East Asia: in China there are online games with 300 million registered users. So it's natural that they started to make novels, manga and TV shows about massive online games. I was reading a comic of the sort from Taiwan that began in 2004. |

It's on the comedy end of the genre. Shut-in gets reincarnated in an RPG like world, just wants to get enough money to live a peaceful life, but always gets roped in trouble by its weird companions. Aqua: goddess with powerful purification magic which attracts undead in droves, transform every drink in water, ... Megumin: only wants to execute full blast spells which empties her mana in one go and render her useless. Darkness: a tank at the M side of SM. |

while it certainly has that at times (first meeting with Chris for example to mention just one) that wish-fulfillment isn't really what it's about. Yes he meets lots of cute girls that accompany him but at the end of the day it's mostly about them being stupid and/or not-so-nice-people, making him the straight man who has to suffer through all this caused by them thus resulting in comedy / parody of the usual "gets surrounded by cute girls (and everythign works out just fine with him being the Hero)" But it is filled with all that kind of stuff you would see in those shows since the comedy aspect relies on making fun of that. |

Pretty much? See http://skythewood.blogspot.sg/p/reccomendation.html, for some examples. Guy gets reincarnated as a slime in RPG like game and becomes a demon lord. Bystander gets summoned alongside with heroes in RPG like world. Guy beats SAO like situation but instead of being released with the other players finds itself a 500 years later where game has become a reality. ... |

How's the fan service? Or rather, is the comedy all about fan service (which I got nothing against but kinda bore me)? |
