so, im doing a project on Japan for a Sociology class and i have to bring in a piece of something from Japan. I picked manga. i said to my teacher that manga is highly popular in Japan and that everyone reads it. and then this one girl says "manga isnt popular in japan! Not everyone reads it". i wanted to smack her so hard, because that goes against everything i've read and heard about on the internet.
So far, i've only found [URL="http://www.us-japan.org/jsnc/virtualjapan/PopJpn/whatsmanga.htm"]one website[/URL] that says that "nearly 40% of all magazines and books published in Japan today are said to be manga". That's a good start, but i need something more, and hopefully something that isn't a wiki or a blog/editorial. that website seems to be a little of both. i need some reliable, verifiable sites so i can shove it down the bimbo's throat. any help you can give me would be really great.

Your statistic there, while suggesting manga is widespread, really doesn't talk about how popular it is. You need to know readership in order to figure that out.
What I know about this topic is based on heresay, but while certainly the Japanese obviously read manga (or else it would not exist), what I've heard suggests that manga is still considered geeky/nerdy and so it isn't overly mainstream (though I think the more popular shows, such as NANA, would be or would get close to it). |

I feal tension growing between dposse and population_tire. The fact is not everyone in Japan reads manga. You should've said "a lot of people in Japan read manga" because that's a fact.

OK OK. START at Wiki. But, don't use it as a source. Nevertheless, it's a good place to get ideas. Just follow the links there, particularly the References.

I know that. I was just telling dposse that he shouldn't have that everyone in Japan reads manga, thats like saying "all black people eat fried chicken and drink cool-Aid". |

Hmmm I think you should also reconsider your idea. Manga isn't read by everyone in Japan really and by manga it could be a biographical manga in political magazines or large amount of manga in a magazine about cosmetics. Not all these books/magazines considered to be manga are actually about the manga part. Although popular there are also too many different genres that just saying all people in Japan read manga seems to broad. Maybe you should do a thesis on which type of manga is seen as more popular in Japan and/or more accepted (which my guess would be either shoujo, josei, or seinen.) You could even do a project like that in America, get a small group of non anime fans and see which manga they tend to enjoy or see as more of a book than a comic book. Actually doing the research yourself may even help your grade.

Wikipedia is the man! People say "Wikipedia is know for being wrong", but after I find out facts on wiki I go to another website with a .org, .net, or .gov ending to double check, and most of the time it's true. Sometimes someone will write "Ben Franklin is a stinky butt mongler" on wikipedia, or in the middle of a sentence they will add "fffffffffffffffffffffffffffff", which happened to me once. |

Although I rely on Wiki for my own personal information searches, I would recommend that you never use it as a citation for a paper of any kind. It is indeed true for the most part, but then there's the fact that it's not an academic/scholarly source because it's open to the public. Like Kyuu said, follow the references if you need something to cite. |

Saying "everyone reads it" IS a bit ridiculous. I mean, does EVERYONE in America watch Sponge Bob? Do Germans ALL parade around in liederhosen and dance the polka? Stereotypes = bad. Also, I'd suggest maybe focusing your project on something you don't already know much about. The point of school is to learn. Maybe you should do it on Japanese fashion trends or something.
If you insist upon using manga, however, please don't use sweeping generalizations...aka stereotypes. |

In the Japanese Club I'm in at my college, we frequently have Japanese students come to the meetings to talk, practice language skills, etc. Most of the students don't really read manga or watch anime. This is in no way a representation of the entire society. It is true that the vast majority of published material is manga. However, it's the kind of thing where most people are familiar with it, but not all partake in it. Or if the do it's very limited. The impression I get is that most people won't admit to reading it because of the bad connotation behind being an otaku, etc. Most of the students that I talked to said they read some or a lot when they were growing up, but not as much anymore. I've even met someone who did not know what Sailor Moon was. So, while it is true that there is wide readership of manga in Japan, it is not necessarily the most popular form of entertainment. And not necessarily popularly accepted, even if it is "popular."
