Very good review. Pretty much exactly how I feel about the film, all in all. I am not at all disappointed that I blind bought the Japanese Blu-ray. And it does have some really nice character animation throughout, even if there is nothing stand out in terms of supernatural, or fancily animation.

It will get a dub right? Despite it may not reach the same standards of their other movies i still want to watch it dubbed and add it to my collection.

I remember watching this in my anime club in college (under the title I Can Hear the Sea), and liking it a lot. The art and animation weren't nearly as flashy as the other Ghibli films I had seen, but the story was quietly powerful (if a bit slow). It's been so long that I've forgotten much, aside from those lasting impressions. I might check it out if I can find it.

One point I should mention is that Ocean Waves is highly recommendable for those who dislike Miyazaki's storytelling and themes. It is so very different in what it sets out to do and who it seeks to resonate with, though it still bears the flourishes of character detail for which Ghibli are renowned.
More generally, I might add that this is as deftly paced as any high-school romance I have seen. Never does a scene curtail or tarry upon an emotional moment, and the result is engaging if not quite sublime. spoiler[An R2 DVD release of this film has been available for many years over here. So a very small subset of people then. It depends on the individual, but of the few people I've met who haven't liked Ghibli/Miyazaki films, they've all said that the pacing was simply too slow for them. So I doubt a film like this would appeal to them much more. Hell, probably less. That being said, I'm still glad that, thanks to GKIDS, we're finally getting the entire Ghibli collection released in the US on bluray (aside from Yamadas, damn you Disney!). But I'll be picking this up when it gets its bluray release instead of seeing it in a theater, as I already have that role filled by the 20th anniversary Princess Mononoke screening on January 5.

I haven't seen it myself, but a friend described it as their favorite Ghibli movie, adding "but I can understand if someone else doesn't like it, since nothing really happens in it"

This film was nothing special. I felt like I was watching a TV drama, only in animated form. The characters weren't particularly likeable either.

I think that subset might be bigger than you think. Or maybe I just keep weird company. I know a lot of people who dislike Miyazaki and are more into Takahata, and other Ghibli stuff. And a few members of my family in particular, for whatever reason, don't really like fantasy, so stuff like this, Poppy Hill, and Whisper of the Heart are about as far as they'll delve into the medium. Hell, the hipster movement these days is big enough that rather than watching Miyazaki to be a hipster, the real hipsters are turning on him because he's too mainstream. It's all about Takahata and Yonebayashi if you have any taste these days.   (I do not agree with that sentiment, for the record)

Avoiding the rose-lens high school cliche did a lot to endear this short movie to me; stories of first love as awkward failure are pretty rare. I find the fact that spoiler[she came back for him at the end] a little hard to swallow though. That seems a little like apologizing for the rest of the movie refusing to feed pleasantries to the audience.

GKids has said no for a dub. I'm guessing they have low expectations for this one, as it doesn't exactly appeal to the normal Ghibli fanset. I suppose that could change in the future, but if they didn't feel the need to spend money on a dub for their theatrical showings, the odds for home video aren't that great. |
