Maybe because it's the first Gundam movie to be released in 30 years?!

I'm kidding. I've been out of the loop Gundam-wise so the last movie I can recall is "A Wakening of the Trailblazer" from over 10 years ago. I've always felt that Iron-blooded Orphans should've had a movie about Mars' past and the early Gundams from Barbatos' generation or even slightly before that. They already had the lore set up for it, but I guess they wanted to just leave most of it for the audience to infer.

I always assumed it would get a sequel or prequel

There have only been 2 right, F-91 and Trailblazer? Movie versions of existing content doesn't really count. Still not a huge endorsement.

I would think so, but I wonder how much of the popularity of SEED will carry over. Kira and Lacus have remained very popular characters, and the series still polls very high when they do Gundam polls in Japan.
