I mean, if you're talking about the manga, did you miss the parts where she was butt naked? And by that I mean the times the manga showed off her butt while she was naked.
Really, it's a matter of after that scene where Kanna pounced on Riko, and then afterwards clarified that she actually was trying to mate with Riko, any of their interactions afterwards gets tinted pink. Very pink.

I'm not saying she's a great analyst, I'm saying this random Tumblr user still has more observational skill than people who convinced themselves S1 wasn't full of loli sexualization. |
Eh, don't trust that YouTuber. They have gotten 85% information of their videos to he wrong such as the abuse going on in Japan and saying "racism = lolis" (this hurts me as a dark skin Mexican and many black anime fans). They lack of understanding and unable to take criticism from others so their skills aren't the best.....
Sorry this is out topic for the mods. Simply had to correct those with given false information. |
I totally agree, but on a different basis for me as the main issue, she insinuates that lolis in Animes encourage child sexual abuse, I'm from Jordan and by her logic there should be zero child sexual abuse because Arabic anime dubs are so heavily censored to the point of having almost no sexual or romantic content. But unfortunately, while not common child marriage does happen here and it is incredibly sad when you hear about it, so to say that an anime like dragon maid is somehow a measurable factor in the occurrence of child sexual abuse is deeply offensive.
sorry if this doesn't count as on topic, I'm new to this website and I'm not sure what qualifies.

Which chapter, I actually don't remember that, and I Kanna wasn't trying to mate, she was trying to "lick" saikawa because that's how dragons "clean" each other normally, maybe I'm misremembering.

And I say this as someone who loves Dragon Maid--and it's clear from the review that this person likes Dragon Maid too. They just don't like everything about it. It's entirely possible to criticize elements of media and still enjoy them. Even if I don't agree with everything in this review. Like I said, I love Dragon Maid but, yes, there are less than savory elements about it I could do without. |
This happens almost anytime a reviewer, or just a regular user in general, dares to insult precious waifus, or somehow criticize the fans sexual/power trip fantasies regarding the show or characters in question. Heaven forbid anyone dare to insult the best girl, or poke a hole in their fantasy. Almost every season there's a show with a character, or two, that garner this sort of response. Any criticism is a personal attack and how dare that person make it. That person obviously hates the entire show and doesn't get it, even if they simply had issue with one small aspect of the story or character and not the entire thing. You can't possibly like something and still objectively criticize it in any way.
Then comes the multitude of excuses for why that reviewer sucks and is just wrong. In this case we've already had the quite old, "but she's not really a child, so even if she looks like a child it's ok to ogle her, sexualize her, and insert her into my own fantasies and if you find the sexualization of what looks like a young child to be off putting you're just some morally wrong a-hole trying to shove western values onto everyone", excuse show up for that part that was criticized. Another prime example of that particular reasoning was with Dance in the Vampire Bund. "They're really quite old and adults so it's ok if they look like kids". The hypocritical thing is that when the situations are reversed, and it's a male character that's actually an adult but put into a child's body, that same group will say how that male character is just a child so they don't know any better in regards to questionable conduct. Like with our old pal Rudy. Funny how that one way street works.
In the end it's all well and good to have criticisms of shows that people agree with, but the moment you criticize the fanservice/T&A or the waifus it's a personal attack and they must come out in force with pitchforks and torches to denounce whoever is making those criticisms. You are absolutely right when you said that is silly, to say the least.

But a studio emerges from the worst massacre in post war Japanese history while still maintaining a healthy work environment, that's when you guys decide we need a reviewer that's gonna put the show in its place? |
Several people have already said it, but I want to emphasize, we review each show based on the merits of the show, not the studio behind it. We've criticized shows made by studios we love, and we've praised shows by studios we don't like. I lost a personal friend in that tragedy; I would not allow my publication to unfairly disrespect them, any of the other victims, or any of the survivors. Most of us really like KyoAni and are incredibly happy to see them put out their first show since the tragedy. But we're going to treat it fairly in our reviews.
| Theron wrote: | | Whether Lynzee now or Zac and Jacob in the past, ANN's editors have never, ever given directives to reviewers about how episode or full reviews should be done, especially what topics should or shouldn't be focused on. That's all on the individual reviewers. |
Thank you Theron. I appreciate someone who is intimately familiar with ANN's reviewer policies, but no longer has any reason to suck up to us clarifying these policies.
| theblasblas wrote: | | then you could at least pick a reviewer that's more representative of the target audience, especially since this is already the second season. |
We always pick reviewers who will give a show a fair shake. Even if they are huge fans of the show, they must be able to point out its shortcomings. A reviewer who is going to do nothing but gush over a show isn't the kind we hire. Lynzee is reviewing Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid because she is a big fan of the first series, but still recognizes its flaws. In this way, she is the perfect reviewer for the show.
Someone who isn't able to point out this fanservice and say "Hey, this show is generally great, but you might not like this aspect of it," would be the wrong reviewer.
It's great if a reader can read that critique and say, "Oh, I get it, but that doesn't bother me at all, so I'm going to check this anime out." Despite Lynzee's comments, someone somewhere is going to read the review and say, "Hey, I like that kind of fanservice. I can't believe I missed the first season; I should check this out." There's no need for a fan to get personally offended when a reviewer criticizes an aspect of an anime that the fan either doesn't mind or actively enjoys.
| Quote: | | Seriously, if they're making comments like "For the mainstream audience, or anyone otherwise not interested in fanservice that involves creeping on kid characters" they're just not the right reviewer for Dragon Maid. |
To be clear, Lynzee was referring to mainstream anime fans, ie: anime fans who are not "interested in fanservice that involves creeping on kid[or having the appearance of children] characters." There are a lot of people who love Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid who aren't into this particular kind of fanservice, and she was keeping them in mind in the review. She most certainly was not referring to non-anime fans.

But Im confused on why the reviewer was changed between seasons. Usually when 1 person reviews the first season, they review the sequel as well, so the reviews stay somewhat consistant in terms of writing. Rebecca reviewed Season 1, so what was the reason for Season 2 being given to Lynzie. Im just curious.

I assign the reviews. Nothing is given to me and I'm not required to write anything I don't want to. Just getting that out of the way. Literally only one reviewer even included this show on their list, and it wasn't Rebecca. I like the show. So I'm reviewing it. Rebecca also took over Villainess from James who is covering other shows this season instead. This stuff is always done with the reviewers' input.
For the sake of the thread, I won't be engaging in anymore questions outside the content of the actual reviews. It's distracting and making mods' lives harder.

It's only a disservice if you think fanservice shows are bad or somehow inferior to non-fanservice shows. Cool-kyou Shinja is a hentai artist who's drawn hundreds of R-18 works. I don't think they'd view someone calling their work a fanservice show as an insult.

I don't know if it's what that poster is referring to, but chapter 81 is pretty much all about Ilulu going into heat and going after Kobayashi while the other characters try to keep her under control. That's the only mating chapter I remember.

You're done with this discussion theblasblas. I removed your latest post. You're not debating the review at all at this point, or even commenting on the show really. You're simply continuing to soapbox in an attempt to personally criticize the reviewer because you don't like her opinions. You're not listening to anything the reviewer (Lynzee), or Tempest (or anyone else), is saying. You've ignored moderator warnings to stop. If you try to post on this topic again complaining about her as the reviewer you're going on moderation. If you have that much of an issue with Lynzee as the reviewer then PM Tempest directly and see how far that gets you.
The fact that a few are so hyper focused on one small part of the review, while ignoring the rest of it which is the bulk of the review, is also getting a bit ridiculous. It's really coming off at this point as a few making a big stink simply because the reviewer dared to have a different opinion. If you disagree with the review that's fine, but hyper focusing on small part and ignoring the rest of the review really does nobody any favors, and does not help the discussion along.

Whether Ilulu belongs in the adult or child group, despite apparently being a similar age to Tohru, is an interesting point. I don't think she felt out of place in the kids group with Kanna, Saikawa and Shota, if maybe the most mature. Would she have felt out of place among the adults on the discussion of a maid outfit for Kobayashi? I think that she might have. Maybe there could be something to how she is kind of between the two. More of a teenager then, which could have its things said about that, but this is anime after all.

Seeing the popularity of other shows with sometimes similar "problematic" points like Mushoku Tensei and Shield Hero I just don't believe your avg anime fan, or "mainstream" anime fan considers such fanservice to be a deal breaker. So, overall, I just think it's an odd claim to make that the "mainstream" fans are the one's who wouldn't like this when you can look towards past anime and see how popular ones filled with fanservice got. Even with Maidragon, It isn't that Dragon Maid s1 got popular "despite" its fanservice, it just seems lots of anime fans actually find that stuff funny and entertaining.

I don't know why people are so obsessed with the word "ok" when it comes to what can be shown in anime in the first place.
It's anime. A cartoon. Fantasy not reality. That means everything that happens in it is morally "ok".
I really don't believe in 'immoral anime'. I only believe in 'good taste' and 'bad taste'. And something being tasteless doesn't make it "bad" or "wrong".

Art doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s a thing that exists in the real world, made by people in the real world, for people in the real world. Fiction works because it takes concepts from reality and uses them to tell stories that resonate with real people and their real feelings in reality. No matter how detached you may have convinced yourself it is the only reason you like the things you do is because of the circumstances of your own life and the reactions you’ve formed from them, same as everyone else. Reviewers are simply explaining theirs, and other people can compare their reactions to theirs based on their own lived experiences. It’s a conversation that has existed as long as art, and trying to stop it by simply declaring fiction as absent of reality is a sad way to instead remove yourself from enjoying that discussion with the rest of humanity.

Er....no. I strongly disagree with that. It sounds like you're saying "you only like the art because you relate to it". I also take offense to that "convinced yourself" line because it sounds like an accusation of me being dishonest with myself.
I'd also like to point out that "fan reaction to a fictional character" being compared to a "character's reaction to a real person in his world" (like in Mushoku Tensei) makes absolutely no sense and should not be compared ever.

You should probably pay more attention before posting. Lynzee clearly said in a previous post in this thread that she's the one who makes the final call on review assignments, so she - as a fan of the first season - chose to do this herself. (And before you try to insinuate that she must not have been a "true fan," note that is was her #3-ranked title for 2017. I think that qualifies.)
