Wow, this is incredibly exciting! I’ve read the book in Japanese last year and it’s fantastic – definitely one of my favorite pieces of Japanese fiction. That being said, there’s definitely reason to be sceptical. The book is long and slow and I don’t think the typical 100 minutes would be enough to adapt it properly. The story isn’t overly complex, but it’s all about character development, so a rushed adaption would do it injustice.
Still, I’ll be looking forward to more news.
Edit: Don’t let yourself fool by the premise, this isn’t a death game or an action-filled fantasy race. It’s mostly a very mundane story about opening up to others with a little bit of magical realism (most of it the castle itself) – and that’s what makes it so good.

I have the book but haven’t read it yet. Guess I need to get on that.

I read a review of this book on Anime Feminist and I'm interested, since it plays with fairy-tale tropes and has a girl power sort of message. I'll be excited to see the anime!
