I think Sony would be better off just using Crunchyroll as the name of their streaming service and release their TV anime titles through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and their theatrical anime films under the TriStar label. If it's a mainstream anime film (i.e. My Hero Academia), then the Columbia Pictures title should be used.

Damn, after Gkids almost had all of Shinkai under one roof Crunchyroll came and ruined that.

It's likely there will be a theatrical release, just like Funimation did with Your Name. Even before the merger, Crunchyroll did a few theatrical screenings (though usually partnered with someone else, if I recall correctly).

Kind of surprised GKids didn't license this. I guess Sony is that powerful now.
Well, I guess it's all good that it's getting an official release (not that there was much doubt for a Shinkai movie) but now I'm expecting a full Texas cast of Funimation vets in the dub.

Crunchyroll/Sony/Funimation just released Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in theaters to great success, why do people still think Crunchyroll doesn't do theatrical releases?
Edit: Also, the article says worldwide minus Asia, but the CR blog mentions German and French-speaking countries are the only ones specifically included for the European release. These seem contradictory. Do they have all of Europe or not?

GKIDS only releases films in North America.
Crunchyroll/Sony/Wild Bunch were able to license the film not only for North America, but much of the non-Asia international markets.

I guess I'm not surprised someone other than GKIDS would end up nabbing this one - especially now with Sony backing up Crunchyroll. It's only natural anyone in the anime industry would be vying for a new Makoto Shinkai title, as he's probably the biggest name in anime short of Miyazaki himself right now. It's mildly disappointing, but it makes sense.

I just hope the picture quality will be a bit better than Crunchyroll's typical theatrical releases. I saw the Konosuba and Jujutsu Kaisen movies in theaters and they felt like a similar video quality/resolution as their streaming videos, just blown up on a larger screen. Even the subtitle fonts used were the same, so maybe they were using the same production processes.
The releases from GKIDS of Your Name, Belle, etc. all seemed higher quality and with actual surround sound instead of just what appeared to be stereo, although maybe the other movies weren't mastered in surround to begin with.

My main concern is Oscar nominations. I know they don’t really matter too much, but now that Hosoda has one (in addition to most of the Ghibli folk), you gotta have the next biggest name in there. Weathering With You actually got close too thanks to GKIDS, and I’m
hoping for a more successful repeat (not counting the time Funimation butchered the Your Name campaign).

Okay, totally honest question here: how much do we actually care about the Oscars? If an anime film were to win "Best Animated Picture" or some other award, how much impact would that really have on the industry and medium anymore? Does the Oscar win have any real pull on the regular market these days?
Don't get me wrong, if a Shinkai, Hosoda, etc film won, that'd be neat; I'm just not aware enough of the Oscars' influence to know if they really make a difference long-term, outside of particular "elite" circles.
