If I recall correctly, Shiren 3 (for the Wii) was given a hard time in Japan for being too easy compared to the previous titles. And even other mystery dungeon spin-offs got rejected for similar reasons, Nightmare of Druaga in particular. I suppose Pokemon had so much franchise power it didn't matter there.
So, funny enough, it feels like the devs were ahead of their time with those approaching-roguelite spin-offs. But I can definitely understand why they shy away from lightening Shiren's burden. I'd be interested in what they'd do with a new original roguelite-esque title, since now there's an accepting audience for that. (Although I'm definitely glad to see Shiren proper continue)
