I'm guessing the profits from the first one, are going towards funding the second two. While it is nice knowing that I won't have to crowdfund them, I do wonder how a BD is going to work for the West.

I’m wondering how this film is going to received by mainstream critics. The trailers have been stunning, but very busy. I’m guessing there will be a ton of stoner references in the reviews.
Wow. a Satoshi Kon award is an honor just from the name of the award.

Looking forward to seeing the Mononoke film, however I'll end up going about that. (I'm hoping it'll get a theatrical release overseas?) But I sure am surprised by all this. I had always thought Mononoke was SUPER niche back in the day, so seeing it now all these years later get a film, and then make that *three* films, feels a bit mind-boggling from a business perspective. Was this always a much bigger deal than I thought it was? (Perhaps in Japan?)

I feel like Mononoke is one of those rare short anime to have achieved cult classic status. It has had multiple physical releases in the US (DVD by Maiden Japan and now Blu Ray by Discotek) and has remained available for streaming in one form or another for years. Merch has continued to trickle out even during this quiet period, too, and I sometimes even see an odd cosplayer at conventions.
I'm involved in a zine project right now for the old anime, and people were flooding out of the woodwork wanting to celebrate the show.
