Maybe I'm a data nerd, but I love studies like this, anime isn't this nerdy thing you have to hide away, it has become this mainstream thing, many people who are in sports like anime, eg Jamaal Williams (RB, New Orleans Saints), famously JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR, Kansas City Chiefs) did many anime celebrations after catching touchdowns, most famously the Naruto one while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018, and that's wonderful!

It was at a World Fair in 1964 (I think) that Osamu Tezuka had a brief chat with his hero, Walt Disney. Tezuka mentioned about being the director for "Astro Boy" and Walt admitted to liking that show.

The only thing that truly surprises me in all this is who the heck is Lionel Messi? I don't think I've ever once heard or seen that name before despite their apparent fame.

A few months ago, I remember a parody trailer for Akira from Honest Trailers describing anime as going from “guarded by the smelliest kid in class” to “just the word we use for good cartoon”. And boy doesn’t that say it all. People just view it as another cartoon to watch.

Studio Ghibli is immortal.
Sadly, some of my favourite series (which are from the 90s and 2000s) have almost sunk without trace today, albeit they were huge just when manga and anime was beginning to get big in Western markets (mid-2000s).

Considering all the subpar CGI nonsense that is getting released, it's nice to hear that actual animation is being appreciated

That's a good point. It seems like every new American animated show that is not one of those bland ugly stifled bean faced comies, is considered an Anime.

zillennial here and i understand big shonen shows have overlap but lumping all of 'anime' feels flawed imo. this is my dumb nitpick.
this is the yuasa-pilled anime hipster in me talking but i'm probably not gonna get along with the jjk/aot mainstream shonen/isekai fan.

I wonder why not??   Am I the only one to be cynical enough to think that Crunchyroll got just the findings that they wanted? And what is the bit about contrasting all of anime to individual celebrities? I suspect the findings would not be so good if they compared anime to sports or to rock/pop music represented by those celebrities.
There is no doubt that anime is a lot more popular and has greater name recognition than it did even a few years ago. However this set of surveys strikes me as very self serving by Crunchyroll. Insurance to keep their Sony overlords happy.

Most assuredly self-serving.
However, I work for a public library system and we specifically have a manga section in my branch. It's multiple shelves now. They've ordered tons of new manga for us specifically because it checks out really well and is frequently requested (we order what the people want). My local Target and Walmart stores also have dedicated anime and manga sections. One Walmart in particular has a Crunchyroll branded area with signs labeling it as such, character goods, plushies, Figuarts, etc. It's definitely hit a particular level of exposure/popularity with certain demographics.
