The darker elements in this series make more sense when you learn that the guy who directed this and did the stop motion is Tomoki Misato, whose first forays into animation were horror shorts, especially My Little Goat, which is gory and violent. Though Sanrio itself is no stranger to darkness, if their movies from the 80s such as Ringing Bell, Nutcracker Fantasy, Ideon Be Invoked, and the Unico movies are any indication. Still, I love this series and genuinely enjoyed it. I am kinda miffed that for some reason the credits on all languages only list the voice actors but not the characters they play. I don't know if this is some weird NDA thing enforced by Sanrio or Netflix, but it's just weird.
Oh, and the insert song that plays during Kuromi's segment in the baking contest is an absolutely killer slice of mid-2000s Hannah Montana cheese, and I mean that as a compliment.

Funny you should mention the Unico movies, because that's exactly what I was thinking of when I talked about the darkness in this series! Those movies terrified me when I was about seven to the point where I have a visceral reaction every time I just see a picture of Unico.
But I loved this series, too, especially the art and animation. I used to find stop motion deeply unsettling, and the clay-based ones sometimes still are (to me), but I adored the little felt dolls used here.

I smell a Doreimani review coming!

I can't believe how engaging these stop-motion anime from kids media companies are; all the ones since Rilakkuma have been very interesting.

I absolutely loved this series a ton and I hope it gets a disc release someday. You can really see Kuromi-chan's evolution in character since her Onegai MyMelo days (there's even a hint to the continuity), and both MyMelo-chan's periodic snarkiness and Piano-chan's occasional action switch were really fun. Harinezumi-kun had a surprising number of scenes in the forefront, too, including the opening scene with their birthday. I have a newfound love for them~
Of course, I loved the Japanese voice acting a tooooon, but I'm a long-time Sanrio fan with an attachment to the original voices, so the dub's change in characterization just felt extremely out of character and really uncomfortable to me. I suppose someone who likes English dubs might be interested in it on that level, but I wasn't a fan at all. Cute is kinda the point of Sanrio and why I like it.

Huh? How did the dub change the characters? I don't get it.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only one who got Unico vibes from this. Super cute at first and then turns into a kid horror movie.

You didn't even explain any difference. How can we know what you are talking about? Do you expect everyone to just comb both versions?

This was definitely not the description for this I was expecting when I read this review.

I've been enjoying a funky anime line-up on Fridays with a friend where we watch a combination of Wind Breaker S2, Maebashi Witches, and The Summer Hikaru Died.
We have been trying to watch in an order of the most upsetting, to the most comfy and lighthearted shows. We learned quickly that adding My Melody and Kuromi to our rotation and watching it last (for comfort) was a mistake.
