I continue to like this show more every week.
Maybe the humans who showed up to sabotage the works did so believing that all of the witnesses in the castle are destined to die anyhow. I forget...do the heroes resurrect if no one takes their body back to the capitol? I found it somewhat amusing that the nutjob king is attracting a small groundswell of support. Viva la revolution! And I find Kylo and Sivia's growing mutual respect an interesting development from several angles. Feels like it's political suicide on her part though. It's practically suicide suicide just in terms of her volunteering to stay in the castle. I like the growing cast of heroes. It's helping keep the pot spicy. So now they've got a fighter, a sniper, a magical weapon maker, a thief, and a con-man. Wonder what gap the volunteer hero would fill? |

Ugh, I could do without that Tsav character. He is Zenitsu from Demon Slayer (screechy blonde guy) levels of annoying to me. I don't like his voice or his "ha ha, look at me, everyone, I'm a psycho!" attitude. Die in a fire, bitch. Yeah, yeah, I know, Heroes can't die... and more's the pity.

Sub. I've never checked out the dub version but I should just to see if they came up with somebody equally as annoying.

Zenitsu from Demon Slayer levels of annoying is quite the high bar. I am not a huge fan of Tsav either but atleast he carries his weight and is not screaming his head off whenever an enemy is on the screen.

A sociopathic and solipsistic sniper. Gotcha. You know, a blabbermouth Tsav may be, but I actually like him. More like, I like his kind. He talks a lot, but even Xylo has conceded: he's effective and pulls his weight around. He's a perfect example of how you can't argue with results. Okay, so another Hero explored. I still don't fully know Your Majesty's full story. Or even Dotta's. What's up with them? I want to see the same interrogation scene for both of them. |

That was a messy battle and they barely managed to get a win. It took three heroes and one goddess to take down the demon lord. In the background there was lots of chaos with Tatsuya doing things that are hard to explain even if he has died so many times. The arrival of the mercenaries and reinforcements was cool, though we sadly did not see them in action. Beyond the fighting there were some memorable moments. Teoritta finally getting a proper reward and Xylo being a bit more honest for one. That shady priest appearing is another. Given that he went out of his way to heal Xylo it seems unlikely for him to be a traitor so maybe he is a Nick Fury type figure in that he is trying to assemble a force to save humanity. Heroes are despised so they are an elite force that nobody else wants to be associated with. So yeah, good episode but maybe it would have been better if the fight had been an episode longer with showing more of what the others were doing. |

I wasn't sure this story arc would finish this episode, since there was potential for it to be drawn out an additional week. The animators are moving along at a brisk pace though, so as expected Xylo and Teoritta end up claiming yet another kill to their burgeoning boss slaying count. This one nearly killed Xylo though, despite all the preparation and all of the assistance mustered specifically to hold the castle for the original plan to go ahead. Rumours of Tatsuya being summoned from another world thanks to a goddess's powers, yet he's little more than a beast running on instinct at this point. That being said, it's a good thing he's working together with the rest of the penal legion, since no one really wants to be against him given what he's capable of. Not only can he temporarily increase his muscle mass, his scream is so powerful it literally destroys organic matter with proper aim. Coupled with his lack of fear and immunity to brainwashing, he really is the penal legion's berserker who excels at indiscriminate slaughter. Tsav has proven his worth as a sniper, and he's also clever enough to know when he needs to withdraw when the odds are against him. He kept one final shot to hold off the boss core long enough for Teoritta to finish her summoning, and combined with his good work holding off one front almost single-handedly I'd say he's earned his keep. Dotta being the typical thief that he is did well enough to bring down the wrath of a mercenary company on his own. But the way he did it meant the mercenaries would have to fight their way through the monster horde to retrieve their pay. Given Dotta was eventually on his own when he reached the victorious pair, he must have either ditched the loot he stole or the mercenaries were so depleted from engaging in an unintended flanking attack against the demon lord's monster summons (perhaps a bit of both). His zap pistol certainly has the juice to give even a demon lord pause when he's on target, which also played its part in buying Teoritta time. Once the frontal defences had fallen, I had thought Norgalle's job was done. Turns out he rigged the magic cannons first seen in episode one and part of the fortress's armament to allow the fortress to hold out for just that little bit longer while Xylo and Teoritta got to work. His ability to get most commoners to listen to his orders like an actual monarch is heavily underrated. Venetim obviously disobeyed Xylo's orders not to deploy the reinforcements which came in aid of Xylo, and we still have no idea why Xylo was so adamant in refusing their aid. That being the case, they formed the other wing of the accidental pincer movement which kept the monster horde engaged while Xylo and Teoritta got to work against the demonic manifestation. As for Teoritta, her secret weapon is probably something even the Church wasn't aware of. If they knew she could summon disposable black holes/dimensional portals in the form of swords, they might have opted to employ Teoritta instead of the poison Goddess for a permanent kill. Interesting how the marks around Xylo's neck also spread up along Teoritta's body the more she uses up her powers. Is this the same phenomenon which forced Xylo to kill his partner? Teoritta for once actually says something which even Xylo has no answer for. He has no choice but to acknowledge he's not that different from the goddesses who will kill in return for affection and acknowledgment; his motives are simply different from what they yearn for. Either way, killing demons and fairies is the job they're brought in to do and both of them will keep doing it until they die or the threat is permanently dealt with. The priest (Kafzen) who visited Xylo after he awoke is the same one who sentenced several members of the current penal legion to their current fates. In addition to being the very embodiment of the institution Xylo despises for their betrayal, he also lets on the important point that he is aware of the faction which works with demons for co-existence. That would imply the Church is not a monolithic entity, and that some elements in the Church are working against the appeasers. We do not know enough about Kafzen to find out how much of the truth he's telling, but he's got his eye on Xylo and that's not a good thing for the penal legion which is ordinarily sent out to die as disposable tools rather than the "trump card" he portrays them as. The challenge each story arc imposes on Xylo and his companions gets harder and harder each time as he not only has to battle against increasingly powerful demonic foes, he also has to work against the existing military command and traitors from within. So far we've not seen much progress on the main storyline, but there's got to be something more significant for Xylo and Teoritta than killing the demonic manifestation of the week and earning credit with the powers that be in a slow and gradual manner. I appreciated that we got past a lot of the tsundere posing this week too.
Tatsuya claims to have been summoned from another world by a goddess? I missed that part. I thought it was pretty significant that Xylo was getting at least some gifts from commoners from the areas he's saved lately. It seems he's taken some small steps to putting the word "hero" back in it's original context. The heroes' perks and drawbacks were pretty clearly outlined here. Tatsuya's great when cornered but a berserker. Dotta is a talented thief and somewhat loyal but a kleptomaniac. The sniper is extremely competent at his job and also a fairly complete @$$hole. Norgalle is like Don Quixote if Don Quixote were a skilled enchanter. Venetim is a scheming, self-serving coward, but keeping the group alive is at least sometimes in his best interest. I thought it was a bit rushed too, but good stuff overall. |

Dotta stealing from the mercenaries and planning to pay them with that same money, is a scene straight out of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: "This white shite steals my things and thinks that he can sell it back to me? He's got less brains than you, Lenny!" Speaking of Dotta, what the hell did he steal to be sentenced as a Hero in the first place? He's the Looter class of the bunch, but man, he must have stolen a sacred item or something. |

Ep6 is the first time I think the raison d'etre for the show has come into focus for me which is among reasons why I haven't posted before. Sure, there has been a lot of action and the visuals are artistically superb, but the pairing of Xylo and ("goddess") Teoritta with his tragic "goddess killer" backstory was one of several elements sort of thrown into the mix of a number of interesting characters like Tzav and "His Majesty" (gotta love those two) and interesting conflicts with the Demon Blight Horde, the Army, the Church and Government. But what is it all for? While we still don't know everything I think one can now definitely say it is Xylo and Teoritta's story and the rest is a backdrop that connects to that story and may eventually have stronger relevance. Just had to say...

Episode 7 being the start of a new volume and arc could not have been any more obvious. New characters, a new location and a brand new quest. Character wise there was Jayce and fiance Frenci. The former is a competitive dragon nut and the latter... I am not sure about her. The new quest seemingly being against mostly humans and in a crowded city is a nice chance. Add the Spriggan to that and it could get pretty hectic. Looking at the opening there is only one hero left to introduce. |

I legit thought that the female assassin/adventurer in the ally was Frenci at first...that the fiance was trying to kill the goddess to free Xylo from their contract.
The dragon rider's logic around counting demon lord trophies seemed dubious at best. Xylo was so mature about it that he was barely recognizable from the screaming, butt hurt edgelord that showed up in episode one. And that's a good thing. |
