I love the series, but I do wonder if we might, you know, get to the main plot one day after the invasion arc.

Right?! I've been following the manga and the original anime has been pretty faithful, even has the chibi stuff.

They're remaking the first season because its animation quality is uneven, and the pacing is slow. Toei is betting a remake that brings it up to the standard of the more recent seasons will make the series more accessible and bring in a larger audience.

As stated, they obviously think the original show's production values have hindered its popularity. It also gives Toei a way to keep the franchise in people's minds while they wait for enough manga material to accumulate to prevent half decade gaps between new seasons.
