hello guys. I've been watching anime for quite a lot of years now [as I suppose many of you do
 ] and I consider myself some kind of expert in this field. It rarely happens to me not to get the meaning or plot of an anime, so what I'm gonna ask for it's some real exception. I've just finished watching Visions Of Escaflowne [it was one cult anime I never got enough time to see] and I really had trouble with the ending. I mean, there is nothing difficult or specific to be understood in the very last episode, but still I'm quite uncomfortable with it. Given that I liked the whole thing a lot and that Escaflowne deserves his reputation, I would like to know what you people think about it. Especially regarding this two points.
1) why does hitomi need to go back definitely to the earth in the end? didn't she say she wanted to stay in Gaea, since she liked it? to me the answer to this question is critical, since if there's no real meaning I'm bound to think that they made her come back to earth merely to made a tragic heroine out of her. and this isn't very good, it sounds like the result of a lack of better ideas. 2) this was kind of enigmatic. why does[in the very last frames of the 26th episode] hitomi see a planet looking up in the sky from the earth ? what is it? is it gaea? why is it there? I have a motive to justify this hypothesis but first I wanna hear what you guys think of it. Thanks for any post you'll make in response to this. [EDIT: Spoiler warning added to title.~Zalis] |

Dunno much about number two, but as for the first one, I would say...well, she was there mostly due to Dornkirk needing her for his plans. And after her purpose -- helping restore peace to Gaea -- was completed, there was no need for her to stay in that world. Plus, she missed her family and friends, no doubt, even though her feelings for Van still lingered.

They spent an extended amount of time on one episode talking about how she missed her family. Note also in the last episode how she tells Van she would love to stay in Gaea...but doesn't put up much of a fight on that front. I mean, gee, how many characters were there in Escaflowne whose mothers were driven to an early grave over the "loss" of their children that wasn't really a loss?
 That was certainly intentional. So Hitomi has to go back. There will be other men in the future, or maybe she'll go back to Gaea someday, as that hasn't been ruled out at all. But for the moment, I think the writers knew it would be anachronistic and in poor taste to have her become a queen or something and leave her mother, father, brother, best friend, and even Amaaaanooooo in the dust.
I was more disappointed that we didn't get a resolution in Millerna's romantic dilemma or that Prince Sheid was left a wee bit hanging as well, honestly. Those issues were a lot more troubling to me personally. (Of course, Allen needs to grow up quite a bit before he gets romantically involved with anyone again. He's got issues, man, serious issues.  )
As for the planet she sees in the sky, it's Gaea all right. Don't think about it too much. Hitomi has a habit of seeing things that aren't exactly there a lot. She also sees an image of Van on the rocks. It's clairvoyance more than being anything that's actually there. It might mean she's going back soon, along with the feather, but there's no real proof of that. Just typical anime-writers teasing you. |

It's been awhile so I may have this wrong, but didn't Hitomi give her pendant to Van? If so, it means he's free to visit her anytime his royal duties permit. Which may not be that often, but perhaps enough to stay friends (as opposed to something more).
