And it probably will never be done as an Anime. As I recall, a Hollywood Studio bought the rights about the time of the original release in America and planned to do a live action Movie (Charles Bronson was to play Mai's dad). For some reason the project was canceled and basically the rights were sat on for all these years.

Thats not good. I got the manga and like the story. I'd love to see what anime version looks like.
